my maximo im-490s arrived today from woot

I was so glad when they arrived. Ive been without headphones for about 2 1/2 weeks. My old cx300b was sucked up by a vacuum.

Anyways, when they arrived I pulled them straight from the box and gave them a listen. I wasn't impressed at first. To me, the highs seemed a bit muffled and the mids were very prominent. I didnt like at all to be honest.

They have a tag on them saying that they should be burned in for 8-10 hours to sounds there best. I let them sit attached to my computer with pink noise being played through on an endless loop for about 3 hours and gave it another try cause I couldnt wait any longer.

Let me tell you, they sound a boat load better now. The highs sound a bit more natural and the mids arent as over-bearing. They have very punchy bass when it comes to bass drums. I havnt tried them with boomy rap yet so I cannot comment on how they perform with that. I got them off woot for a total of 17.99. They were definitely worth it. I think they are quite comparable to my old cx300 which I payed $80 dollars for two years ago. I really liked my sennheisers, I think these are just as good for a fraction of the price.

The only issues I am having with them is the silicon ear cushions. Im using the largest one and they are borderline to small. I can still get a good seal though. If they were slightly larger they would be perfect.

I only bought these as I was planning to buy something higher end later (klipsch custom 3 or the monster turbine) on but wanted something now that I could listen to till I had enough money for either of those. To be honest, Im questioning myself as to whether I should pay for something thats 6-7 times as expensive as these when I am quite satisfied with how these sound.

Thanks for the info. I thought the 390 had shrill treble, but still would have bought these if they weren't sold out when I went to woot.

Haven't tried iM490 before but I like the sound of iM390. I am also burning in a pair of iM590 right now and needless to say it also sound fantastic. Hopefully my review will be up early next week.

I dont know what they will sound like un-amped through my sansa, but Im sure they will sound great. Probably 95% of my music listening is done at my computer through headphones.

The more I listen to these things the more I am liking them. I really do love these things, Ive never heard any high end IEMs before, only these an my cx300s. However, I really do think these sound fantastic.

Everything sounds so clear, instrument separation is great, great highs and mids with nice punchy bass. I would do a full on review for you guys, but I am not really sure what to say. I will say however that I would have EASILY payed full price through amazon if I had missed out on the offer on woot.

I guess I need to listen to them again, and hope woot get's some more (and I don't miss out on it).

How did yours arrive already? Woot just shipped them out on Tuesday. Are you one of the lucky folks who happens to live right next to them?

Anyway, I'll probably post some short impressions as soon as I get them (a week from now). I'm hoping they're less bassy than the CX300.

Little update.

I was removing one of the ear cushions from the right IEM and the damn ear cushion ripped apart. So, a little FYI, either put them on and leave them on. Or replace them with something else.

No loss, as far as I'm concerned. I got im-490s one of the previous times they were on woot. The included eartips were all useless. I made my own from earplugs and it's a major improvement.

I stuck on a set of cushions from my brothers v-moda vibes. They work very well. Much better isolation and comfort now, sound quality went up slightly as well.

Just received my pair of iM-490s (SmartPost ) and I must say first of all that the build quality is excellent. I have some reservations on the quality of the iM-290, but these appear to have very good fit and finish. I also find that the design appears much more understated and classy in person, as I think the pictures make the phones look cheap and tacky; pics don't do these justice.

I like the fact that these came in a standard box as opposed to those terrible blister packs. The extension cord is a nice addition, but I'm not a fan of the silver pouch, either in its appearance or practicality. A hard case like the one that comes with the iM-590 and 390 (and 490S) would have been better, but Wooters can't be choosers.

The sound out of the box is pretty good, though I'll take the recommendation of 8-10 hour burn-in before I make final judgement. I will say that these seem to have a much better midrange than the CX300, but the soundstage seems a little cramped with orchestral pieces. Of course, I'm optimistic that they'll open up a little with burn-in.

To revive an old thread...I also bought a set of these from woot for under $20. They are a great set for folk, jazz but get pretty crowded in rock. They are a step up from cx300 or ep630 and sound best at low volumes. Never heard skullcandy's but am sure these have it all over them. Comfortaable with a little bloated bass but decent mids for the price. I now keep them in my laptop bag and use them for dvd's...very good for that. If you can get a set for under $20 go for it....great knock around cans
