Yes, most definitely!
Preferably an external dedicated amplifier, even if the one built into your portable device will make it play.

The operative word here to me is "need."

The answer is YES for the 250 ohm version.

The answer is NO for the 80 ohm version, with most devices.

I disagree about the 80ohm. If your definition of "need" is to get sound, then yes you are right. If your definition of "need" is to sound good, then the answer is no. My 770/80 sounds like crap compared to how it sounds out of any of my amps.

Agreed. I'm sure they're easier to drive than the 250 ohm equivalent, but amping is still beneficial. Though I must say, my laptop managed to do a surprisingly decent job before I found an amp.
