Recommend me a high capacity DAP with great SQ

Hi all,

Well my Sony X ownership was somewhat fleeting...
Too many issues with it, laggy screen, awful browser, limited storage (32GB), no lossless support (FLAC)...

What I'm looking for is a high capacity DAP with great SQ and lossless support.

Any Ideas, suggestions please...

By high capacity i mean in excess of 60GB.

PS: Is there any DAP out there that supports 24/96Khz playback?

What on earth is an Imod?

I must add though I DO NOT want to use a headphone amp...

a modded Ipod

imod = a modded ipod that has the amp bypassed, meaning you have to use a headphone amp.

I guess if you want something that large, the only new players that do it are the zune and a stock ipod.

Otherwise, you could try finding a creative vision:m 60gb version. (i'm not sure if these are still in production)

Whats the SQ like on the Zune's?

Zune 80 and Zune 120. Unless you dont want to use WMA Lossless and the Zune software.

a notch below the Sony and Cowon players.

I'm afraid you already had the bestsounding player...

It may have had good sound but 32GB is just not enough...
In addition the quirky UI was getting to be a pain.

Just wish Sony could release a 120GB HDD player.

So really my only choice is the Zune 120?

Great SQ, high capacity, support FLAC....

maybe a 32gb Cowon line (S9/O2/Q5) with 32gb SDHC external memory card?

Cowon Q5 is too big...
Cowon O2...Again far too big!

And the Cowon S9...Only 32GB with no possibility of expansion...

how about Kenwood HD60GD9??
Sound quality is one of the best, 60gb capacity, support KLAC (kenwood loseless)

There was a similar thread about this, recently: http://www.head-fi.org/forums/f15/hi...g-drop-429435/

So far, you mentioned the following:

- Lossless support (and FLAC was specifically mentioned)
- 80+ GB storage
- No amp requirement
- Not too large in size

If you need FLAC, then the 120GB Zunes and iPods are out (one supports WMA Lossless, the other ALAC). Which makes covering bullets #2 and #4 very difficult.

My only suggestion, other than a D2 with multiple SD cards, is an iRiver Hxxx or Gigabeat F, with a HDD mod + Rockbox. It's a DIY, but it would fill all the above requirements. I'm not sure if Rockbox does 24/96Khz FLAC playback, as I've never tried it.

What I've gleaned from the rockbox forums is that there's no accomodation for word lengths other than 16 bits, regardless of whether the codec in a given dap might support more or less.

It's open source, so, that can always be fixed.

Dunno that I've seen a DAP with a 96khz dac in it, though.

Edit: Whoops - the wm8751l in the gigabeat F will do 96khz and word lengths up to 32 bits. No idea if rockbox is set up to try though.

But i agree - an F40 with an mk1214gah shoehorned into it with a zif adapter (or an X60, which has the same parts and doesn't need a zif adapter - but good luck finding one) would do the job, though you might have to pay some coder to add 24-bit support to rockbox. Not exactly svelt though.
