Squeezebox classic and iPod touch? - Page 2

Remember hard drives are NOT quiet and I am pretty sure even the quiet ones will be louder than any decent PSU fan
Wrong. I've got a few Western Digital greens, and virtually zero idle and seek noise. They're quieter than a quiet PC PSU.

But why the emphassis on small and quiet?
Because the TS-119 is both. It's quiet and small enough to in your Hi-Fi room. A computer cannot be cheap, small, powerful-ish, low power consumption, and passive cooling. Haviing no case fan will probably result in a internal temp that's a bit too warm.

You could underclock and undervolt
Then you need a motherboard with those features, I've found MATX boards pretty basic in clocking functions.

And what about when you need more power when doing database scan? Go into BIOS, reset settings, reboot, do the scan, reboot go into BIOS and use low power modes. lol.

You do understand that their is nothing special about any consumer NAS that makes it not a PC. It uses consumer available PC hardware, including the OS. Most are some linux based OS, sure some of the software ontop is special but that is all. The CPU, the motherboard and the controllers are all off the shelf.

I will bet money you can build just a cheap, quiet, and power friendly machine. However I think for a decent Squeezecenter experience you need a bit more than a 1.2Ghz cpu and 512MB of memory, particularly if you end up doing any transcoding.

Again WHY mess with a squeezebox if you are putting the whole thing in the home theatre room? Big reason to use the squeezebox hardware is so the noisy bits are not in the room with you.

And no those green WD drives are not silent, I can certainly hear them in my machine with case fans going.

Do own a NAS or just babbling? I'm not doing any transcoding.

Simple, use a crossover cable and place NAS next to Squeezebox. No need for networking or switch. Silent. Mate did that, and a nice neat system.

Including RAID hardware?

Setting up a NAS is simple, a computer is not. Setting up Ubuntu with slimserver is a chore. You could use freenas I guess, has slim server been added to it?

Hi there,
You might be able to find more useful information in slimdevices forum.
I don't have any experience with squeezebox classic but do have a duet with the controller as well as an iphone.
Before iPeng became an official app, it was a pain to use and you had to reconnect everytime. Now it stays connected much better but I still end up using the controller all the time because it's easier to get to different functions and sources.
If you haven't bought it and want to use the itouch as a remote, you might want to consider AppleTV too. I can tell you that itouch remote works very well with AppleTV (not surprising). you can easily find a lot of dicussions about the pros and cons about them. Since you are asking about squeezebox and itouch remote, I would say that the itouch is not nearly as user friendly as the controller.

Thanks for the info... I was looking at the duet and was pretty sold on it until I read complaints on amazon re: the controller losing connection with the receiver. I realize that this is not the case for everyone but there seem to be enough of a trend that it scared me off.

There are a lot of people reporting the same thing in slimdevices forum and a lot of them have network issues. Same as AppleTV, if you go to the Apple forum you will find a lot of them. Mine seems to be ok and Squeeze box has much better tech support than Apple if you do have problems.
Do you listen to a lot of internet radio? Or do you mainly want to listen to your own music files? If you want both, squeeze duet is your best bet. You can always skip the controller for now and use an itouch as a remote(if you have one.) If you don't care too much about internet radio then I would consider AppleTV because I find it easier to use. It also has a hard drive so if you buy the big one you can store a lot of your music there and not have to worry about streaming. When it comes to sound quality, they are both good if you use an external DAC.
Forgot one thing, if you don't like iTunes than forget about AppleTV!

I've had good luck with Apple so far. I bought my first Mac a couple months ago and an Airport Extreme. Prior to that I did not have a wireless network in my home and they were very helpful when I called to have my hand held in setting everything up.

I considered Apple TV but I really just want something for music. I use Pandora and my iTunes library. All three of the HDMI inputs on the rear of my TV are in use and I don't want a cable out the front (not that it matters much with Apple's 720p feed but still). I really just want something that will easily stay connected when using the touch or remote that comes with it, fairly easy to set up, and easy for the wife to use.

Sounds like squeezebox duet is just what you need. You won't be disappointed. Enjoy the music!
