Unless of course, you'd care to show us the insides of the Marantz.
sure, the digicam's locked and loaded...one of these days, perhaps

I used to own a pioneer elite pd-59 w/ legato link and stable platter transport but wasn't terribly impressed with its somewhat artificial attempt at 'warmth', which manifested itself mostly through muted highs...different strokes, I suppose.

j-curve: Actually, I'm not so sure, whether my PD-S601 features Legato Link at all, but at that time I was very fond of the quiet and stable drive - and the fact, that it didn't leave marks on my cds like the Philips that I had before (and that had some rubber pieces integrated into its tray which were causing these marks...). Sonically, it wasn't that much of an improvement, but I also enjoyed the direct access buttons for track 1 to 20 on the front plate of the Pioneer. However, I haven't used it for the last 10 years or so - except one digital recording experiment with a portable minidisc recorder a few years ago.

Greetings from Munich!

Canman: Unfortunately the stable platter has been discontinued by pioneer.
New from Pioneer... the revolutionary "Unstable Platter". I can just see their marketing team sitting around trying to come up with a list of advantages for that one.

lini, yes I agree with you 100% about the quiet mechanism. A lot of CD players (most?) are unsatisfactorily noisy for use with open headphones but the Pioneer is relatively quiet.
BTW, if your RCA outputs are near the bottom of the back panel then I think it's unlikely that you have the Legato Link.

Actually, the stable platter is being discontinued all together To my knowledge, Pioneer will now only make carousels

Just stumbled upon this old thread, and I'd like to add that I've recently reinstalled my PD-S801 after having used a Cambridge Audio 540D v2 DVD player as transport (fed into a DACMagic) for about a year or so, in a rather failed attempt to limit the amount of devices in my rack... I must say I'm still very impressed by the sound of this CD player (way better than using the DVD) and very relieved to be freed of the ticking of the DVD player... What a great player. Way to go, Pioneer!

j-curve: thanks for telling us your journey through the insides of this great player. I'm afraid the pictures are all gone, but reading your adventure was a lot of fun, even without pictures and even for someone who understands merely half of what you're talking about!
