I have a F40 modded to use a Toshiba MK1214GAH 120GB drive - there is a way to do this, but it requires three things: One is the new drive, of course. The second is a converter board to use a ZIF drive, and the third is some electrical tape and some patience. I'm also assuming that you are using Rockbox.

Here's a guide, on the Rockbox site (they are using an F10, but this applies to an F40 as well):

ZIFToATAAdapter < Main < TWiki

The main problem I've had was with the cable shorting out, when you close it up - that's where the electrical tape comes in.
