I have not but you are the second person to suggest this...what's involved in trying these tubes? Also where can I purchase them from someone that is reliable? Thanks!

As a suggestion, the funds spent on all the tubes and adapters could yield a Feliks Audio Elise, with the sale of your LDIII, that's in a completely different class of performance. FWIW, I own a LDIII with 6HM5 drivers and 6SN7 output tubes. Yes, it sounds much better than a stock-ish LDIII, and at the same time it cowers in shame next to the Elise. Now is actually a very good time to buy an Elise, as its introductory $500 price won't last long. The amp is worth far more.

Can anyone using the Vali with the 600 OHM version comment on whether this can drive up to a satisfactory level? I will never go over 80 dB, and stay in the high 60's to mid 70s, so I don't listen too loudly. I just want to make sure that the Vali will be able to give them enough volume. Of course, if you have thoughts on the SQ of the combo, feel free to share those as well

Two weeks into spending quality time with the Darkvoice 336SE, and I am loving the 880 pro more that before (which was already a lot).

It didn't alter the sound as much as I expected, which is great. The slight bump in the mids really made these sound excellent (to me). I think the most pleasant surprise was how clean synths sound, and how realistic string instruments are rendered. Slow sustaining guitars, harpsichords, very real. Also, drums have a ton a punch / snap to them.

Also... tube glow in a dark room.

Thanks Liu & Chris for the DAC suggestions. Question: Since the Modi 2 Uber has a external power supply, is the Wyrd still needed? Or would it be better to pair the Wyrd with the Modi 2 regular USB? –S

Glad to hear it. I just got my first pair of DT880 600 ohms and they are fantastic headphones, definitely better on the otl amp than my others but still nice on the Gustard. Have yet to try on the Lyr. These headphones really only do better with quality recordings, making sub-par masterings sound worse than my other headphones do (which is actually not a weakness). They excel with acoustics for sure though I have had some great results with electronica as long as recordings are not overly compressed, which sound particularly bad on the DT880.

As for the question of the Wyrd, It highly depends on your USB power on your computer. I would go for it and return if you don't like it. I have heard the Wyrd makes a particularly noticeable improvement with the Modi. However, I have not experienced it myself, only with the Gungnir.

Best wishes

Well said I love my DT 880 600 ohm headphones, although I have not heard through otl amp. I have only heard these cans through my hybrid lyr 2 and SS amps Asgard 2 and the Ragnarok.

I've been listening to my 600ohm DT880's through a Capella amp lately and its been amazing. These really are special and they do sound excellent from my LD MKIII also!

I've been using the Elise with my DT880/600. Best I've ever heard the cans sound: liquid highs, transparent, detailed mids, and subterranean, tights, highly articulated bass. Sounds better - a more resolving, exiting, enveloping presentation with a grand sense of scale - than with my V200, which is truly saying something.

Great to hear these impressions. Yes, the bottom end is impactful and tight and midrange just right (not too full but not recessed) while highs are very detailed while less fatiguing on my LF 339. Really fast transients up top, which I really enjoy for classical. And I am not sure why but it is the only headphone I have that seems to represent brass right, which can sound really overbearing on my HD 650. Very important for some Mahler recordings. I think it makes an excellent complement to the Sennheiser. and the beauty is that they both thrive on similar amps. Again, it is much less "forgiving " for poor recordings, which is what I anticipated.

Hope to spin it in on my Lyr here if I can pull myself away from the 339.

Best wishes,

The DT880 is really nice on the Lyr too. I've only listened to one album by Schoenberg, but the clarity and dynamics were fantastic. I really need to do a shoutout with the H10 and the Lyr for these particular headphones.

Looking forward to that comparison.

I've searched this thread somewhat extensively, and it seems like people say the silver velour is softer (foam, not surface) than the black velours, but then people separately say sound the same. If they're different density foam, shouldn't that have an acoustic affect? part of why I ask is the DT880s on their way to me have black velours, and I don't want sonic differences to mess up what I should be hearing. Any thoughts on this?

That looks like a nice amp. It uses the exact same tubes my 339 does.
