Dem collectors q.q, there are reports that the old DT 990 [like early 90s] sounded a lot like and a touch better than our current gen DT 880

This is appreciation of the DT-880. You can tell by the serious look. He's listening to Metallica - Whiskey In The Jar. Schiit Modi>Schiit Asgard 2>DT-880 Premium.

Very Nice!
You can tell by the look in his eyes that he is longing for tubes in the chain to bring out the best. biggrin.gif

I'm considering the A2 or A20 beyers headphone amp, but I'm
nervous about the brightness. Why give up the Valhalla? I thought about getting the Valhalla? Does it drive the 880 sufficiently?

I've been listening to my 880s on an Asgard.  It's a perfectly fine match.

A few weeks ago, I had the chance to listen with the Valhalla and they sounded like a completely new set of headphones.  It took away some of the edge and graininess and felt like a near perfect pairing.

I've now got the Valhalla 2 on the top of my wishlist.

DT880s absolutely loves tubes. Give them (and yourself) a treat. The Little Dots, Darkvoice, and Valhalla is an inexpensive gateway into the world of tubes. Give it a go. biggrin.gif

@TrollDragon : Just saw your review of the Miu Audio MKTP-1 and I must say... those are a sexy pair of DT880s.

IM TELLING YOU GUYZ! The dt 880 600 ohm LOVED the Schiit Vali! I was super amazed at how well it sounded! For $120, I don't think there is an amp that combines the warmth of Tubes with the transparency of a solid state as well as the Vali did :3

and it was magical on the DT 880

I got on board the Vali Hype Train... and then got off at the next stop. It didn't wow me and make me want to sell all my other gear. It was so thoroughly hyped that it didn't live up to my expectations. Granted I like the Beyer + Vali pairing more than Beyer + Magni but still, I found it kinda... ordinary and pedestrian. I actually preferred the NFB12's ss amp. :O But that's just me. I probably have brass ears. biggrin.gif
