Pick yourself up a pair of these driver tubes, they are one of the best the thread has found for a non modified LD.
The guy who i bought the LD MKII from didnt even put the all the tubes in the protector and was laying around inside the foam casing, lucky they didn't break. Tho I got a good deal on it for $149 f/s and the guy was locally so i got it in one day. Tho I don't know which gain he used, maybe he remembers.
You could have told me that before.LOL
I have been playing around with some tube emulators. Of course nothing like the real thing, but I think it gives me sort of idea about what can a tube amp can do for me. I find that it can round out the sound where some music is less harsh. But this is at a loss of detail.
Can a tube amp tame the DT880s? How well do these phones work with a tube amp? The more I think about this, the more I realize that this may be the way to go for me and my DT880s.
IMO it can for example Littledot MK III with RCA 6SN7 GTB Black plate both driver and power tubes more in bass and very smooth treble,Sylvania 6SN7 GTB chrome top all tubes for LD less bass more in mids and again smooth treble and with Tung-Sol 6SN7 GTB driver tube and RCA GTB Power tubes nice bass and mids but ear piercing highs.
My experience so far has been that it helps a little, but don't expect to change the sound signature of the headphones. I've just come to the conclusion that some songs are just going to be hard on the ears, while others will shine and sound sweet and airy. I guess this is one reason so many people seem to have more than one pair of headphones.
I decided to route my music to my home studio full sized speakers. I got this pair for $200, which is a great deal for them. I was expecting the same or better fidelity from them as I get from my DT880s. Boy was I surprised! I thought the speakers may be broken. I checked the cabling. I checked the settings on the amplifier. Everything AOK. What a disappointment! But I cannot afford better home speakers. So I guess I am "stuck" listening to my DT880s. Life can be difficult! LOL
You wouldn't happen to know where to get a matched pair would you?
Man, that sure sounds like the early stages of a very serious and seriously expensive disease.
