bigsmile_face.gif I'm not sure when he is starting the cups, as I just finalized the wood today. So I'm sure by a week they will have been started.

I didn't know they had black ones. I'm assuming they're just a different color variant of these:

http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-EDT990V-Headphone-Pads-Silver/dp/B001BYL5YE/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1373927282&sr=8-6&keywords=dt880+pads

What I find confusing is that the DT770 pads are silver in this picture:

http://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-EDT-Replacement-Pads-Pair/dp/B0016MMYKA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373927282&sr=8-1&keywords=dt880+pads

Is this just the wrong picture, or are there silver DT770 pads as well as black DT880/990 ones?

Correct.

Beyer says not to use the 770 pads on them, that the EDT 990 V/VB are the ones designed for the 990 and 880 (and they're the ones that they come with). Wolfetan, you got the right pads. I recently bought them too! The 880 Pro looks mighty lovely with black velours.

I'm just taking ideas from the DT880CB thread because the main modders have said that they sound awful with the DT880 pads, but...since you've bought them already you might as well try them to prove me wrong! I was actually about to buy a DT880 to do the CB mod but...I found a great deal on an HD650 that I couldn't resist. If I end up not loving them (or realize that two open headphones is a stupid idea in college and need to get a closed headphone) I call possible dibs because I love cocobolo. biggrin.gif

Dibs on my incoming DT880s? Contact me, and we'll see if we can work something out;)

There are silver and black versions of both the 770 and 880/990 pads.

EDT 990 V = 880/990 silver velours

EDT 990 VB = 880/990 black velours

EDT 770 V = 770 silver velours

EDT 770 VB = 770 black velours

Oh, and then there's the black leather/pleather "soft-skin" 770 pads which are EDT 770 S.

Cheers! Yeah, it really wouldn't be very hard to swap out the yokes. wink_face.gif

I own the DT880 600ohm Beyer’s and a Little Dot MKIII amp, I love the sound but would like to have a SS amp to do some comparative listening. I have been reading about the Matrix M-Stage and also the Objective 2 amplifiers. I am not as interested in absolute power as I am clarity and detail. I listen to a wide variety of musical genres all straight from the CD. Any input and suggestions on a reasonable priced solid state amp would be appreciated.

What's "reasonable priced" to you? Lake People G103S looks pretty good at around 300. You might like the Magni, I didn't. I found it a little too thin and bright but the clarity & detail was there, just not enough "meat" on it for me. I prefer the O2. From reading comparisons of the M-Stage and the O2, I got the impression that the M-Stage is a little darker than O2. Chris J has the M-Stage, maybe he'll toss in his impressions on it.

TL;DR. Bright to Dark -> Magni > O2 > M-Stage.

Supposedly the DT880 performs best when given a lot of voltage. The G103 puts out a lot more voltage than any other amp I know of in its price range including the O2/Magni/M-Stage. Just a thought.

Yes, maybe Chris J will toss in his impressions! biggrin.gif

The Matrix definitely has more slam than my vacuum tube La Figaro 336C.
It took me a while to warm up to the DT880/600 and Matrix.
Could be because I started using an LM4562 Op Amp in my M Stage.
The Matrix certainly does have a more natural presentation than the 336C.
With a lot of Rock recordings I've always preferred the Matrix over the 336C, the 336c has a slightly warmer midrange, but when I listen to Aerosmith (for example), I prefer the slam and drive I get from the M Stage.
The Matrix is a good amp for the money, I really don't think it does anything wrong, I prefer it to several other low budget SS amps I own like the FiiO E12, E17, E09K and the IBasso D12,
It just sounds clearer AND fuller. Nice.
BTW, the Matrix has enough power and voltage to drive 600 Ohm DT880 to ear bleeding volumes.redface.gif
Not all of my SS amps really output enough voltage for the 600 Ohm DTs.

OTOH, the 336C has a nice touch of tube warnth and lushness that works with a lot of music. I think what is really going on is that I enjoy the added distortion, which is probably mostly 2nd order harmonic, which doesn't sound like gritty distortion, it just sounds warmer. This works great with acoustic guitars, female vocals, acoustic jazz, etc.

You have the Little Dot, so I think you know what I mean! I would guess that your Little Dot takes a bit of the dryness out of the DT880.

Somewhere in Head Fi there is a comparison of the O2 and the M Stage by a Q701 owner, he prefers the M Stage, he thought the O2 was too bright for his Q701.

Hey guys, any tips on how to make my 880's not the ugliest pair of headphones on the planet? Seriously, Beyerdynamic nails the hard part (sound) and messes us the easiest part which is the design lol.

I think you'll find most people here like the way they look. I certainly do. Most of the people I know prefer the look of my DT800 Pros to the look of my HD600s or any of my other headphones for that matter.

I do think, personally that the Pro version looks better because I like the extra black on it. I have the black velours on mine right now and I think it looks great.

My advice?
1. put them on Monica Bellucci
or
2. put them on Rachel Weisz
or
3. put them on Kate Beckinsale.

I hope this helps?
