The Beyerdynamic DT880 Discussion thread - Page 3

I've got my dt880's 250Ω with the woo 3+, and its awesome. I haven't had the chance to test the beyer's on SS or any other amp, but there seems to be a special energy there, like what GuyDeBord says about the music 'floating.'

I'm in the process of tuberolling to find the right mix for the 880's. I've also got some Grado 325is, which are good once in a while for acoustic music, but the 880's just do everything so well, and generally, so much better. I'm really interested in getting some 770's and some 880 600Ω's.

600 ohm version? Un likley. I hear they are best with low ohm headphones. I had the DT880 driven by my DAC1, and they sounded a bit under powered. It took the HR2 to really show their potential.. But this was the 250 ohm model.

So, would I be able to drive the 600 ohms w/ the Caffeine amp?

I definitely plan on upgrading in the future but I've heard the DT880s scale very well so it wouldn't be necessary to buy a new amp straight away.

^ not a chance, better get the 250ohm and it still is a lot of load for a caffeine, to decently drive the 600ohm you need an OTL / tube amp or a powerful SS.

short term lurker thinking of picking up a set of dt880's.

will i be able to drive a set of 600 ohm cans with a gilmore lite?

I've been listening this week with a pair of 600 ohm DT880's I bought from another head-fier that he had balanced:

and they sound FANTASTIC. I would say they are 20% better than the unbalanced ones, but not sure I can attribute the whole difference to the balancing, since my other DT880/600 have the stock cable. But in any case, these balanced cabled DT880/600 sound very, very good. Smoothest treble yet from a DT800, and smoothest mids as well. Yet still nice and open and quick sounding like the 880's always are. Good stuff!

^ now you got me curious... should I re-buy a pair???.... The dt880/600ohm are probably the ones I miss the most out of all the ones I let go

I have had balanced 880/600's for some time, and I agree they are excellent, really remarkable. I bring them to all the NJ and NYC meets, and everyone who tries them loves them.

I got them from the beyer MANUFAKTUR German Site (more color choices than U.S. site), and had them re-cabled/balanced by Larry at headphile. Drew at moon-audio has also re-cabled/balanced other HPs for me, so since you can now order 880/600s directly from him that is another way to go. Both fellows are wonderful at their craft.

The amp I use with them is SS, specifically designed for 600-ohm phones and nothing else: QESLabs (made in Italy -- super stuff -- owner is Val, email him!).

I am eagerly waiting for you guys to compare the current DT880 600ohm variant to the upcoming Tesla phones.

after recently buying the dt990/600, i've decided to put my HD650 up for sale to fund a pair of dt880/600. i really like the dt990 for electronica and large scale orchestral, but need something with a little less mid-bass for jazz and chamber.

That is something I will do for sure, as I plan to buy the new high-end Beyers as soon as I can get my grubby mits on a pair

what are you guys amping the balanced beyer?

I always try to look over this thread but can't stand it anymore. Is the Little Dot sufficient enough to power the 600OHM monsters?

I am using the Audio-GD Phoenix that I have in-house for review.
