And thanks again for your continued feedback.

The ODAC is highly regarded. As is the HRT Music Streamer II. In fact, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the MS2 compares to your Xonar DX because its what I have and I don't have any other DACs to compare it to.

I thought Chris J was only referring to the K550s and the physical size of the headphones smile.gif Part of the reason I chose the K550s over the DT880s is that they are closed and have minimal leakage so I won't disturb the other passengers.

It would also be far quieter than the people using their cell phone speakers to play music out loud, or the crazies yelling about whatever. I don't see that as being inconsiderate at all except in a library or other particularly quiet space, where there is an expectation of that quiet. Busses and Trains ain't it.

Hey, that looks pretty cool. Kind of like the 9.6v batteries from my remote control cars as a kid. Is this thing as "highly regarded :)" as the ODAC? And ODAC vs D1 is ODAC on top?

Thanks!

From what I've read I'd say the ODAC and MS2 are equally well regarded at that price point (they're both $150). Whether or not one is better than the other... well I wish I knew that. :) I went with the MS2 and my guess would be that they are pretty evenly matched.

My one concern with the MS2 is that it's aging a bit (2010) compared to new D1's / ODAC. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has feedback about it or if age really matters with DAC's.

I don't think age really matters with DACs so much as the quality of the DAC overall (which is based a whole lot more on how well its implemented rather than which specific DAC chip is used) and the bit depth / sample rates it supports. Older DACs often only supported up to 16bit/44.1kHz for example. The newest DACs coming out now support up to 24bit/192kHz. The MS2, ODAC, and D1 support up to 24bit/96kHz.

Actually... I'm going to pull the trigger on the HRT :) I just read some stuff about the D1 being the same chip as the Modi (which I didn't like) and the ODAC being a little harsh (which I am very sensitive to). So that about settles it.

I'll let you know what I think in a week or so when it arrives!

Awesome! Very much looking forward to your thoughts on it compared to your Xonar especially considering that your ears seem to be pretty sensitive if you noticed imperfections in the Modi that many others seemed to miss. Looking forward to it! Congrats on the purchase! :)

@maskedbacon,

Do me a favor... if you post your impressions and you don't get a response from me can you shoot me a PM? I don't want to miss it. ;)

No problem :)

And by the way I'm going to test it paired with a JDS Labs O2 and a Schiit Magni.

Thanks to everyone who responded to me along the way!

Going by their measurements alone, they're both neutral and audibly indistinguishable. The MS2, OTOH, has features which the ODAC doesn't. Personally, I bought the ODAC+O2 combo.

Yes, just the physical size!

Don't take my comment too seriously, it was only supposed to be funny! biggrin.gif

I saw a guy the other day in a camera store with an iPhone and a pair of Grado SR-80i, I got into a conversation with him and he let me try the 'phones out for a few moments, the combination sounded awesome! Nice guy, too.

But he did look a bit geeky with the 'phones on!  tongue.gif

Hello,

I've been using a pair of DT880 Pro 250 for over a year. I have about 100 hours of use - new daughter + first house = head-fi on the backburner for a while - but now I use them every night.

I like them a lot. Bass is getting more presence over time - for example kick drum has more punch. Mids are clean and treble is getting smoother.

The big difference in my setup happened a few days ago when I got the Little Dot DAC_I converter. It feeds a Little Dot MKIII tube amp that acts as a preamp on a Little Dot MKV.

The results are astonishing. Right now I'm listening to Exit Stage Left from Rush and I feel the vibe from the venerable Forum. The soundstage is wide, the instruments are well defined, the 3D feeling of the instrument positioning on stage, the cymbals are smooth, the bass and the guitar shine... I can focus on an instrument with precision or feel all instruments as a whole. The sound has a lot of details, nuances and dynamics.

I don't have the clamp feeling. They're comfortable.

I'm very, very happy. Thumbs up !

My wifes brother was here today and he is always praising his speaker setup, he listened to my dt880 trough a little tube amp I have. And he just said shiit, how much did this cost you? Said how much it costed and he can't belive it sounds better than his rig that costs more than 10-15x times as much. Love the price/quality ratio of headphones.
