Brooko's comments with regards to DT880 250 Ohm vs 600 Ohm: from here

@SHAMuuu

DT880 has been made for many years, it's not strange to find different sounding pairs.
Unit to unit variation is as real as the headphone itself, and can be seen everywhere. It's not a DT880 thing.
Go into the HD600 thread and you'll find people talking about unit to unit variation, go into K702 thread or Tesla T1 thread and it's the same thing.

Head-fi is normally crowded with hyperbole type of comments, so take those with a grain of salt.

I commend Brooko for a great many things, but I respectfully disagree with him--as I do on his belief that the HD 600 is neutral--on this point.

Beyerdynamic confirms there are sound advantages in the higher models. To oversimplify this matter, if there weren't any appreciable differences, they would be just producing one unit and thereby save themselves substantial money from not having the added manufacturing costs of three units.

"All sound advantages of the 250 ohm and 600 ohm variants are ultimately of no benefit if the headphones on the player being used do not produce the required volume."

There are sound advantages and I hear them as plain as day in my 600-ohm model. Perhaps less discerning ears cannot hear the difference. I can without any difficulty whatsoever. If and when I get the chance, I can blind test myself with a Pro unit and my 600 ohm unit. Then we can see where this all stands.

Guess I won't toss them into ocean just yet then.

Anyway I go to basshead cans for skull shaking bass.
660.32 for classical types
880 is just like a general listening at normal volume.

But it still stings a little.

Wah wah wah

For what it is worth, the Denon AH-D5000 is a great bass can and could work well as a stable mate. Good luck finding one at a semi-reasonable price, though. When I bought mine a year ago, it was actually a Denon AH-D2000 (same drivers) which I added stock wooden Denon AH-D5000 cups to. In the end, I spent approximately $350 buying the D2000's (~$200), then cups ($100), and a silver cable ($50). If you can get over the neglible drop in detailing and tonality, it is a sure bet. They remind me of the Sennheiser HD 650 with much better bass and treble extension which means they are quite fantastic! If I wanted a warm sounding headphone again, the Denon's would be my top choice with question. Skylab likes/liked (I believe it is still in his inventory) his pair quite a bit.

I seriously just saw that yesterday while browsing and instantly thought: finally, Denon, you get. No more of those dirt ugly, wonky sounding knock-offs. It is finally back to your roots and the deliciously good audio fare that made Head-Fi madly in love with you.

To this day, I still scratch my head and think: why did Denon discontinue their AH-Dxxxx series? That was perhaps one of the biggest flubs in headphone history. Though I do know one very likely reason why: it was not a matter of if but when those dang gimbals would break. It happened to me six months in and I had to do the (in)famous zip tie fix since the replacement headbands are no longer in stock.

Obligatory eye candy...

That little bugger provides enough juice for that badboy?
I double amp (xtrempro pc>x1>bravo ocean>880.250)

seems to color it a bit like a vintage stereo. Still very neutral however. Adds a touch of warmth to vocals.
