I like the FiiO E17.

For the money I am very happy with it.

For $250-300 you can get the E17 and E09K, which is nice because ou have a rotary volume control and charging station for the E17.

It may sound silly, but I really prefer the convenience of the rotary volume control.

 

This may drive you nuts, and maybe just coincidence, but I've seen a few bad comments WRT the Makerick product posted on Head Fi.

I've never heard one so I can't really comment on the Maverick.

I've heard an Audio Engine D1, a really nice sounding piece of kit.

I know a guy who owns one, he really likes it.

Iv'e been told.... then IDK since I know where I live/will live I won't be able to get tubes easily, can't I just be happy with the stock ones?

Has anyone changed the ear pads and found that they drastically altered the sound characteristics of the 880/600s?  I've had mine for about 2 years, and the ear pads were getting somewhat flat, so I replaced them about 2 weeks ago and now it seems like the bass is far "boomier" than I remember beforehand.  Obviously I would expect the sound characteristics to change a bit based on the new pads moving the driver farther out from the ear, but so far I'm not terribly happy with the change.

 

The stock GE tubes sound fantastic with the DT880s. I got some Orange Amperex PQs and they definitely changed the sound. I like it; it's not as crisp, but there's amazing detail resolution with them. There are some things I like about the GEs more, for sure. There is no problem with the stock tubes. They're great.

Thanks, I think if I ever get the Lyr I'll leave it stock, I luckily have a tendency to leave everything stock, If I purchase something and I like it's performance out of the box then I find no needs for upgrades, etc. So I think I'll be good with stock tubes . It's probably just my budget/ highschooler with no money way of thinking though.

Maybe with the new pads it's just how it's supposed to sound, and you just don't remember since you are used to the sound of the worn pads... In the article it says that Beyers are really notorious for the sound changing when the pads are old. Makes me think I need to change the pair on mine...

I'm not sure how many dac-amps with s/pdif you will find in that price range. With USB you might have more luck. As a pure amp, the Valhalla is very sweet for the 880. The Lyr has a lot of power for these relatively sensitive cans.

If you can find the leather pads for the 880 they make a big difference to the lower end on the 880. I love the sound of these guys but I did prefer the leather pads - I ended up giving my 880s to my Dad , but decided to keep the leather pads just in case. Glad I did, as I have my second 880s incoming.

The E17 has an optical SPDIF input as well. It comes with a toslink to mini-toslink adapter.

Thank you for your advices, folks! I appreaciate that. Some hours ago I finally ordered my 880/600 and the E09k+E17 combo for the total price of under 500€. I hope they will do fine for me, but I guess no matter how bad it'd be in your ears -  this combo will impress me a lot and be enough for me as my last "headphones" was a Tritton AX Pro 5.1 gamingheadset. Don't really want to speak them bad, but for non-audiophiles they do a decent job. Anyway, I hope I'll have a lot of fun with my beyers and FiiOs. When I receive them next week and listened some days to them, I may will order one of the 990s just for comparison.

 

I'll also try to find out the difference in sound between the E09k+E17 combo and only the E17. If I don't see any difference, I'll send the E09k back.

 

If the 880s bass is to less for me, I'll just compensate it with the E17 EQ.

 

DONT'T WANNA WAIT UNTIL THE END OF NEXT WEEK!!! I want them now -_-

Oh yes, I'll do. Every impression helps other people for decisions, espacially in the audio section. I know that now. But don't epect anything qualified, as I didn't read myself in the "how to describe sound" - topic... yet.

It will be interesting to compare your experience with my experience with the E17 + E09K + DT880/600!

BTW, I'm keeping my E09K.
