I have the 880/600 ohms on order -- will be delivered Friday.  I have the other 2 phones, and while the Shure has outstanding detail retrieval and crisp highs, I think after a while they become fatiguing to the ears.  I love and recommend the Senn HD600.  I'll know how it compares with the Beyerdynamic on Friday.

The other issue, of course, is the Shures are closed, the others open, if that's a factor

The recievers did sound very much the same, and overall good. Stx and objective 2 was the one I would say did the best job with both 250 and 600 ohm version. And the info about the STX not being enough power for the 600ohm to sound rich and good is false info.

Had a hard time finding good info on this as most people who has tested both have done a test betwean 250 pro or before 2005 with the *new* premium 600.
And as an conclusion I now love Beyerdynamics I really wanna hear some more of them in the future, maybe an T1 :P

I have a few question.  Have you heard much difference in sound when your headphones were connected to the Onkyo receiver via headphone out jack and when plugged in to your PC through ext Amps?  Have you tried to plug them in directly to your CD/DVD through any of your Amps?  If yes, also have you noticed any differences?

I got my 600 ohm version yesterday.  I did not have too much time to test them.  Anyway, I plugged them in to my Onkyo TX SR 674 and they sounded very good to me (I was listening to Jean Michael Jarre "Aero" album and a few Beastie Boys/Blue Man Group/Sade/Rush songs) but the bass was slightly lacking (just a little).  The receiver had enough volume for me (it was pretty loud when I increased the sound volume almost to max).  

I certainly need to do more testing and decide if I need to add a Dac or Amp/ Tube Amp or the combo of them down the road.  

I know that everybody is different and there are many (for me too many) different opinions what works/sounds better with beyers dt 880 600 ohm.  I'm just asking about your opinion cause you also have an Onkyo AV receiver which for sure has the same headphone output as mine as well as a few external amps.  So you can compare all o them.  Thanks for the answers in advance.

I suggest you get yourself a headphone amp that can output more voltages since i don't know the presonus firebox specs, the DT880/600 will sound awesome if it's driven properly

I think the HD600 is more enjoyable to listen to, personally, as the timbre is more accurate and there's a little bit more midbass presence, as well as goooorgeous mids/vocals on them. But the DT880 is noticeably faster and the imaging is fantastic, as well as the instrument separation. These 3 areas are where they blow the HD600 out of the water. Honestly I'd love to have both, but if I had every headphone that I liked the sound of I would have like 6 pairs of headphones right now. Just can't afford that!

If you listen to a lot of electronic music, the DT880 will sound more enjoyable at first impression. However, if you really enjoy vocals, and listen to anything more often than electronic, the HD600s will win you over. As far as "neutral" is concerned... the HD600s are closer I think, but on the warmer side, whereas the DT880s are just a teeny bit farther away, and on the colder side. I like both of them equally... maybe the HD600 just a teeny bit more. But the DT880s are a great complement to my HD650.

I got the 880/600's several months ago and ran them through my Onkyo TX-SR707 receiver for the first few months.  While I thought it sounded okay it wasn't as good as I was hoping.  I also ran them through my onkyo A5VL SACD player's headphone jack.  I found I had to crank the volume almost all the way on the CD player to really push the music through these headphones.  I spent about 2 months going back and forth with the receiver and SACD player when I finally decided to try an external amp (Little Dot MKIII).  I run this through the tape out section on my onkyo receiver now and still use the SACD player as my source.  To me there was a significant difference in sound once I quit using the receiver's headphone jack and used a dedicated headphone amp.  I have A/B'd these several times and I think the difference in sound quality is quite noticeable.  I wouldn't say running these headphones out of the onkyo receiver sound awful, but I knew they didn't sound as open and full as they could.  Hope that helps a little bit.

I now have some 600ohm DT880s in the mail and an Audioengine D1 in the mail as well, I  think about getting the new  Schiit Magni but iI'm still not 100% sure, price and power look really attractive  though 

it has 130 mw into 600ohm

I was told by Jason Stoddard that id does very well with the 600 beyers, he said they tried both the 880s and 990s

That's awesome! Maybe you can leave some impressions? . I wish I could afford the Lyr, but I'm sure D1+Magni will hold up until i get out of high school and can get my own money hahaha

I've found the Lyr to make the DT880/600 sound warmer than I remember with my DT880/250 and my E17. Makes sense given the tubes, but I think it's noticeable. I love how much more bass they have though, and vocals are much more pleasing than with the 250ohm.

I just received a pair of these from Amazon Warehouse Deals --- in Very Good condition.   My question is does anyone know how I can tell for sure these are indeed 600 ohms?  I measured with a multimeter (granted, this is DC, low voltage) and it measured only 25 ohms.  This doesn't seem right to me.  Especially when I try the same test with my 300 ohm Sennheiser HD600s and measure 300 ohms....

Can anyone tell how many ohms they measure DC across the left or right driver?

Look at the the plug-- my 990s say 600 OHM on the black plastic above the plug.  I also got my 990s from Amazon Warehouse, and I think the rating refers to the condition of the box rather than condition of the headphones.
