If you returned the D5000 for overblown bass, then you do NOT want the DT990, for sure, and I would say probably not the HD650, either. Actually, the DT880 might be just the ticket. They are definitely good all-arounders, and really quite neutral, with maybe just a bit less bass and a bit more treble energy that strictly neutral. Really greah headphones though!

I love high-Z ohms cans.
The amp you are using (Qes) is really particular, since unlike other SS amps, it is an audio current source.
I read something in a thread about the advantages of driving electrodynamic transducers in constant current mode rather than constant voltage mode.

I tried the Hpba-2 in a recording studio owned by a friend of mine, with DT770 cans. A killer beast!
With the 880/600 I think they are terrific

I got mine today and I really like it.
I think it sounds more balanced than my HD600. The HD600 sounds much darker, I prefer the DT880.

I see you already put your HD600 for sale on the boards. Mine will also be there very soon.

Are you driving the Beyers with the DIY OTL amp in your profile? What is the design?

Yes, I compared them for a couple of hours and came to the conclusion that I prefer the DT880.

Funny that the Manufaktur site still says they haven't shipped

Now I'm looking for a new amp to drive 'em. My NX-02 is struggling to power such a high-impedance load.

Sonically, out of the box they are surprisingly warm sounding. Mids are natural, highs pleasant. Bass is a little muddy. Very different from my old DT880/250 '03 model. Could be my current setup though.

Thought I'd want a tubed OTL amp to power these, but I'm not sure I want to go in that direction. Now I'm thinking SS again.

I'm considering a pair of DT880/600s. Will my millet hybrid power them sufficiently, and does anyone have any experience/insight with this combo?

Jpelg - SPL Auditor has plenty of oomph for these cans - 1.7 w @ 600 ohm and it costs 900 $ .

Anyone listen to the "chill" CD that comes with the Manufaktur Beyers?

I am on the verge of buying either a 990/600 or 880/600. I am leaning toward the 990/600 for its bass but not certain yet.

Could anyone compare the sound of either of these phones to the new Shure 840's?

A particular preference of mine is to avoid any grain/glare/harshness/brightness in the upper mids and lower highs. I also tend to like full yet controlled bass.

I like the 840's at their price point. If I had a complaint it would be that they are somewhat unforgiving of poor source material (I think some of these studio engineers have attended too many loud concerts).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I have read the Manufactur are preferred due to impedance matching of drivers. Is this a legitimate concern or am I safe ordering stock 600's from Moon?

The 880's are tightening up already.

Any thoughts on the Earmax Silver Edition to drive these? The Silver model is supposed to have higher gain, lower noise floor, beefier power supply, and better tubes than the Earmax Pro. I love the idea of a little powerhouse.

I doubt that stock tubes are better than Pro has. Silver Edition indeed has better power supply, higher gain and lower noise floor, but it comes with unmarked tubes tbh. It was Earmax Anniversary Edition that came with great NOS tubes and had different color scheme + flight case. Otherwise Silver Edition and Anniversary are said to be same. Earmax Pro and Silver Edition tube prices vary from rather cheap to very expensive, I myself haven't done any tube rolling , cause I have had other priorities so far.
