You aren't reading my question correctly. I want to know what to do with the shielding around each of the cables.

I'll go ahead and solder both shields to the shell ground as stated in this post.

Balanced headphones do not require this connection, the only reason would be if the amp were to drive the XLR input of another device, such as a power amplifier, through a male-to-male XLR interconnect cable.

This is an old thread, but in case anyone is looking, I just got an HD800 and am thinking of how to get it balanced.  Reterminating the stock cable is of course the cheapest solution. Any thoughts on how stock balanced compares to say an Apuresound v3 cable?
