Considering that he refers to them as ear buds, probably the ones Apple give away with their iPods....

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Somehow, I wouldn't doubt that. But, he probably uses custom iems while on stage

Taking into account how Metallica is endorsing skullcandy headphones, I take Joe Perry's comments with a grain of salt. $$$ affects opinions.

Agreed. Now where are the legitimate head-fi-based reviews? I haven't read a single head-fier's hands-on impressions of these since they were released.

Agreed. Not even a review copy? A loaner? Smells fishy.

They did give out the original turbines for free to some head-fi members. I wonder if they are afraid of any negative reviews for the pros. It probably would put a big dent in their reputation if the pro's were not that much better than the non pro version.

I think the head-fiers will the natural thing: line them up head with the other phones in their price class--IE8, Westones, UE TF10--and see how they match up. And I'm willing to bet that Monster wants to delay that matchup as long as possible. Get out as many units as you can and unleash the flak monkeys, before word gets out that the phones underperform the competition.
That's a very good point. If it turns out that they under perform for their price range, they will receive next to no recommendations from head-fi members and will be forced to drop their prices accordingly.

The Monster flak monkeys will do their job well. If someone can be convinced that they need a $120 Monster 6 foot hdmi cable over a comparative $40 hdmi cable, then they will be able to sell alot of turbine pros.

K, let the degrading begin >D

FINALLY, a Turbine Pro review with head-to-head comparisons, by Chris Martens: Monster Cable Turbine Pro Professional In-Ear Headphones (Playback 25) | AVguide. From what he writes, they're not giant-killers, but they're not embarrassments.

His impressions...

vs. Custom 3
Beats the 3 on fit and cable, loses on sound generally.

vs. IE7
Beats IE7 on fit, loses on resolution, especially in the higher end.

I'm still not buying these things new, but on this review, at least I'll no longer reject them out of hand as overhyped.

Looks like he used the stock photos, and he didn't mention whether he had the gold or the copper version.
Still no definitive word on whether these two different color versions also differ sonically.

I just had the opportunity to spend a few minutes with the new Turbine Pro Coppers. Now unfortunately I had original Turbines (non pro version) and Sennheiser IE7s to compare to. I was going directly out of my Ipod. My impressions:

Fit and Build quality: The build quality seems top notch. The fit is much better than the IE7s that I have. They have a new tip in the Pro line that I find really comfortable (That was my biggest complaint with my older shure E4Cs that I owned. They would really become uncomfortable after extended listening.) The new tip is a softer material on the outside that makes a great seal, without the feel of "having something jammed in your ear canal" :P

Sound Quality: compared to the Shure E4c, and the Sennheiser IE7 I found them to have great resolution in the high end, and much better bass response than the other two. I did not find them to have too much bass like the Gold version is supposed to have. From what I have heard the gold version is for people that like very dynamic, punchy bass.

I will do a more detailed review after I have spent some more time with them. I think I would definately give them an audition if you are looking for something in this price range based off of my initial listen.

saw the Turbine Pro being sold for ~$280 at the local Fry's today.
Too bad they didn't have any floor samples to try out...

hmm so avguide says its comfy but gets beat in sound by the $150 custom 3 and the £120 IE7.

Mark, the Pros are a step up from the original Turbines in both sound and build quality. The sound is more neutral (less bass hump) but extended across the spectrum, and to me still excellent with acoustic and rock, and great with everything else.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to someone looking for a top tier IEM, but there are many from which to choose now depending on sound preference, fit, style, etc. They are tending to replace my TFP for travel IEMs.
