DIY Cans? - Page 2

They are still in their current form. I am still designing a mesh cover for the front and back as well as some damping for the back of the drivers. I must say I am still very happy with their sound.

I mustn't claim credit for the good looks of the Orthodome #4, Our own Mr Tice did the woodwork and Mr Maher did the cables.

The AMT is square because the drivers are square (and big).

Yeah woodwork looks awesome. I assumed those are glued on.
Also how do the phonodomes sound and where do you get those drivers from?

The wood isn't glued. It's built as part of the assembly, held by the forks that connect the headband to the earpieces.

The phonodome drivers are speaker drivers from an ancient Goodmans DVD all-in-one rig from many years ago. They've never sounded very good as far as fidelity is concerned, although the surround sound one worked astonishingly well as a surround sound headphone it also weighed several kilos and was mounted onto a beer-hat.

These day there are to threads at DIYAUDIO on the subject of DIY electrosstatic cans here and here
There's a lot of info in these threads, and it should be possible to make a pair of headphones even with rather lowtech tools, even though it migth take quite a while.

They can be but then they migth not be suitable for DIY-project. Take a look at Stax SR-001 MKII , if you want to know more.
