DIY Cans?

I don't know if anyone has ever made a DIY can, but I'm looking to build one. Anyone have a recommendation for drivers?

Comparatively speaking, some HD650 drivers could be good. Depending on your budget, you could also scour the classifieds here for some broken cans (with working drivers) and go from there. What's your plan/goal?

IIRC linuxworks sourced parts from sennheiser to build (rebuild?) his own hd650.

One word: Phonodome.

P.S. You might also want to look at the DIY electrostatic drivers at HeadWize.

My goal is just to have a bit of fun building a pair of working cans. I'm currently in an area with tons of welding and woodcutting material, so I was planning on either building something using those, or perhaps buying some noise isolation enclosures and putting them in there. How much are the HD650 drivers? I'll probably have to make them open air if I get them.

Without searching, from rough memory they are around $150(AU) per driver. Yeah electrostats could be fun too. Got access to carbon fibre cloth?

Or try a woodturner and get some bowls, drill a hole in them if you want open phones and place some drivers. Just some ideas

one word: floats

People (myself included) have built woodied Grado's and theoretically it would be exactly the same, simply the dimensions "distorted" to fit the shape of the drivers.

I say go for it!
If you want/need to talk it out, opinions, or CAD work.... shot me a PM, I'd love to help

Or copy the K1000 design? Should work

I've done several DIY headphone projects of various kinds over the years. Starting out as a goof and getting progressively more serious.

Original Phonodome:

Phonodome Mk.3:

Phonodome Mk.4

Phonodome Mk.6

Phonodome P.1

Orthodome #1

Orthodome #2

Orthodome #4

The Phonodomes were never really a serious effort, one simply cant expect to get too much out of 4 inch speaker drivers, but the playing around was a good learnign experience in how to put things together and how different build configurations change things.

The Orthodome design I worked on a lot, and I have to say I'm extremely pleased with the end result. It's an SFI driver in a Goldring DR-50 chassis, heavily modified. Each of the 4 made is different in design and they all sound different. Other head-fiers own #2 and #3 and another model I made out of a Stax SR-3N chassis. I use #4 with some regularity. My dad has used #1 since it was finished with his electric piano.

At the minute I'm working on two new designs. One uses the drivers from the Precide Ergo AMT headphone and I have been enjoying the bastardised prototype build a lot. It looks like this:

End result will be built with milled wooden chassis which will look approximately like, but not identical to, this sort of thing:

And I'm hoping to use a Stax 4070 headband with it.

The other design that I'm working on is a massively over-the-top Orthodynamic build. But I'm not dropping any info on that one at all, just for the purposes of surprising everyone once its done.

Building headphones is fun, and if I had the equipment, I'd be attempting to make the drivers instead of using existing ones. Not pictured in this post was my DIY surround sound headphone. Can't seem to find a JPEG.

Hey great work, you've come a long way. Although I'm disappointed you ditched the neon blue/yellow headband arrangement there

That is nice looking phones ! I like to see the evolution

Wow that last pair looks gorgeous. Is the square design your own or is it based/does it come from other headphones?

I like the mk.4 as well

This guy was working on a K-1000 style can but the project thread hasn't really been updated in a while (I was interested in seeing how it turned out, never got around to PMing him about it or anything though). I think he used Beyerdynamic drivers.
