Budget 2ch Home Theater speakers.

Maybe I can get some advise here since I don't even know where to start. My wife and I are finally going to get with the times and buy a large flat screen (since I wood veneer CRT is about to bite the dust.)

With the TV I would like to upgrade our movie watching sound quality as well. We currently have some junky KLH eyesores that need to find a dumpster. I do no want to go surround because I do not care for it. Recommendations up to $500 that don't need a perfect room to sound good in (we have an apartment where the kitchen and living room are pretty much joined.)

How about some flat speakers to go with the flat screen TV? The Magnepan MMG is thinner than a flatscreen and sells for $550. They have another line of home theater speakers, too, so you could go 5.1 some day if you want. Also, check for used ones at Audiogon to save a few dollars.

I've also been impressed with PSB's range of speakers. I gave my parents a pair of Alpha B1s they use with their TV. It's especially good for the money.

Still, I like planars better. If you haven't heard a dipole, you are in for a treat.

The Magnapans look amazing, but I think my cat would annihilate them (maybe you remember my Virtual Dynamics cable...).

There is a dealer of PSB speakers right down the road from me, I will have to go check them out.

I have a pair of av123 ELT525T's in my living room and I've been very happy with them. They have a few shortcomings, but for the price I don't think you can find anything better.

Right now you can actually get a complete ELT525 5.0 set for $800, which is the regular price of the towers themselves. If you watch the B-stock/specials page you can find them open-box (often only for review or pictures) for $400. And, apparently there will be a sale on Monday so you might be able to get a pair for $300 if you check out their forum tomorrow... not sure what's going on with it though.

I have many PSB, Polk and Energy speakers. These are fine brands providing good budget speakers. If you go with flat/architectural speakers, you should plan for a subwoofer also.

I have these. had them about 5 yrs.

they need a bit of power (inefficient). also, if you plan to add a center spkr to it later, forget about it - its impossible to match it (well) unless you buy THEIR middle flat driver, as well.

if you are staying 2 ch, the maggies are great. for movies, I'd go regular coned spkrs (easier to find a 'full set' that way).

Newegg.com - Polk Audio Monitor 70 Black Floorstanding loudspeaker Single

$180 each if you order today. Regularly around $500 or so. each.

I have a pair in the living room and they are quite satisfactory for the price. And at low to moderate volume levels you'll have no need for a sub.
