Ipod Touch vs Cowon D2+ [update: Bought a Cowon S9]

I'm torn choosing between these 2.

These are the things I'd want from a mp3 player:
Lyrics during playback would be nice
Good, long lasting battery for many hours of mp3 playback.
Good/Easy controls
Good soundquality
Good buildquality
Atleast 16GB of storage (Cowon would need a SD Card).
Would like it to be a decent size (not too small!).

I have a D2 (with the + firmware mod), but I've never had an iPod Touch.

Lyrics - never tried it.
Good, long lasting battery - absolutely
Good/Easy controls - takes some getting used to, but not bad. Tactile volume control buttons are critical.
Good soundquality - absolutely
Good buildquality - I believe so
At least 16GB of storage - EDIT: The D2+ has 8GB or a 16GB model. But the SDHC expandability is a plus.
Would like it to be a decent size (not too small!) - the D2 is smaller than it looks in pictures, so be careful. Easily fits in your pocket.

I believe the Touch's main strengths are its WiFi, App Store, and the larger screen size (if video was a concern). I've read that the SQ has improved, but that the D2+ is superior. I'm not sure how the battery life is.

Yea roebeet is right, if you don't need the Wifi, app store, and the screen, go for the D2+. It's cheaper and you can add a memory card to it as well.

lol the most common D2 is the 16gig model and i don't think any player yet beats the 50+ hours of playback that d2 has when playing music

To be honest, depend on your taste of music

Want analytical, more detail, little cold artificial sound, go for D2+
Want warm, natural, less detail sound, go for itouch

unless you watch videos. D2+ should be your only option.

later you can get a custom then everything is done.

don't waste time/money on amps and lods with ipod. :P

Have a 2 year old 4GB D2 and picked up a 16GB one when they first came out and loved them both but I haven't used either since I purchased my first Apple product a 32GB 2nd Gen Touch last September.

Just last week I fired up the D2's to see how they were keeping and to be honest I can't believe how clunky and archaic they felt, the tiny screen, convoluted menu system, touch control seemed so slow and I really felt like I was having to pound the screen to get it to respond, still sounded ok but I think I have become accustomed to the sound of the Touch which I never really thought was bad just different than the D2.

I listen to quite a bit of music but don't really use the Touch much for video but it is certainly a better viewing experience than the D2. The wi-fi gets used a couple of times a day for emails and checking a couple of my fav sites as well as the occasional Fring call to my daughter in Australia and I spend more time than I care to admit with some of the great games and apps that are available.

I originally picked it up cause I got tired of waiting for the S9 and wanted to know what all the huha was all about when the 2nd Gen was released and in all honesty I am glad I did and am looking forward to the 3rd Gen Touch which hopefully isn't to far away.

i was a d2 owner and switched to the touch 1g. now i have the touch 2g. both the d2 and the touch are nice players but they really need to be used for what they are to be worthwhile.

for instance, i thought i would listen to fm radio when out and about and did not, so the fm function never got used. i also thought i would do line-in recordings but... the wma recording of the d2 was wasted as i don't use a windows computer and record losslessly (so i use my sony 828). i also wanted gapless playback and the d2 does not do that.

what it does is good battery and size and has great points for versatility. it is not a good video player as the screen really is too small to be viewed comfortably. its codec support is okay, but with no aac, it is really annoying.

the touch has no fm radio which, though i don't peruse, i wish it had. it does have gapless and aac which is nice. videos are better but... not great. the screen is big enough but not of high quality compared to some other players i have used.

as for lyrics: never used.

buildquality. it depends. if you like all plastic, then the d2 is your bet. if you like metal and glass, then the ipod is your game. it is made of two pieces of material wedged together and is very sturdy. the d2 for what it is made from, is also quite good.

sound: that is up to you as well. the d2 has typical to slightly heavy loss in bass response with low imp earphones (up to 50 maybe even 75 ohm) so can sound thumpy rather than well resolved. without eq, its frequency response is slightly peaked in the treble which makes it sound detailed.

the touch 1g is more laid back and has the most hiss of all three. while i really liked its sound, the 2g is easier to listen to and has the least hiss of the three. the apple products to not have a usable eq while the cowon has a decent bbe effector and okay eq machine.

sq: again, up to you. technically, the ipod is superior, but you may like the sound of the d2 - i did not. i need gapless, aac and a detailed bass and good left to right separation. as you can see though, many love the cowon d2.

battery life: both are great. my touch 2g gets at least 30 hours, i have no idea how much for music alone though. my 1g got around 25-28 on average on a battery rated for 22 hours. the touch 2g is rated for 36, so i expect 40.

my d2 got 35-45 hours without using the sdhc. they are pretty even i think.

Hmm thanks for all the responses. I forgot about the D2+ 16GB version, just somehow thought it only went up to 8GB :P I'm guessing there isn't a releasedate for the Touch 3G yet, which is annoying.

I just came back from a store where I was going to try out the Ipod's. However, I was suprised to see they also sold iAudios. Luckily I brought my DT770's along so I got to test all of them.

I first tried the Touch and the Classic since I saw them first, didn't even see the Cowons untill I was about to leave the store. When I first tried the Ipods I thought they sounded alright, which isn't really positive I guess. The Classic actually sounded better to me, which is something I wasn't expecting. Obviously the listening conditions weren't ideal since it was quite noisy. But I just felt it was a bit better for some reason.

When I then tried the Cowon D2 I thought "This actually sounds quite good". It's safe to say I was more impressed with the D2's. The Ipods had some albums on it though, the Cowons only had some test clips on it, which probably are meant to sound good through their players.

I wasn't impressed with the menu on the D2 though, it's definatly not as clean/smooth as with the Ipods.

Cowon has clunky firmware, but really great sound. You can shape the D2 sound and I have found a small change in the sound enhansments really makes large changes in sound. A warm natural headphone amp and some nice cans really bring out the sound. I have never found an IPOD that sounds as good as my D2, but I have never tried the Touch. Maybe it sounds better than the Nano 3rd gen, shuffle 2nd gen or my old 3rd gen classic. I have a Trekstore Vibes that sounds great, but I am just waiting on the hard drive to die. Trekstore is a POS and I will never touch one of their products again.

I would go with the D2+. Cowon can drive big cans and the battery life lasts a long, long time. Not to mention the sound is great.

Additional on the D2/D2+ - the theme and music screen can be altered, to your liking. There are many themes available over at iAudiophile.net that you can try out.

It does require some time for trial and error, but it can be worth it, in the end.

Had Ipod Touch 32gb and don't like the SQ but it's great for Apps, web browsing and also movies on the go. Sold my Ipod and got Sony 'X' and i can say that the SQ from the 'X' so much better. Clear high, mid, vocal and also clean bass. The supplied earphone quite good as well and the noise cancelling works really well, similar to CX300 altough i use IE7 and sounds even better IMHO

I think I'm gonna go with the D2+ 16GB. I'll miss the apps and functionality the Touch has to offer. But at the end of the day I want a MP3 player that sounds great, and I won't really use the extra apps that much anyways. It's about 60 euros cheaper then a Touch 16GB, atleast.. at the stores I've found up untill now.

Hmm will also have another look at the S9, since it's only 10 euros more expensive.
