Need a recommendation

I'm a new guy to the forums and to the world of quality audio. I have a pair of ATH-M50s in the mail and was wondering how much I might benefit from a portable amp. I hear that every pair of headphones will benefit from the use of an amp, but how necessary is it (particularly with this pair if anyone has any experience with them)?

Are there any (fairly inexpensive) portable amps that a college student might be able to afford? I have heard some good things about the Headroom Total Airhead but I am open to all advice...

Help would be greatly appreciated!

Well to Head-Fi and sorry for your wallet
From my experience with my ATH-M50, you don't really need a amp with the M50. I would say, listen your M50 when you get them and see how you like them before you decide looking into a amp.

The Airhead is a good entry level headphone amp or you could also try a DIY CMOY.

I use a Hornet with mine. It sounds good, a little wider sound stage, more controlled bass, but I honestly don't think you really need one. The M50's sound good from the headphone out of my Sansa Fuze.
All though I don't have one, I've heard a lot of good things about the FiiO.

Thanks for protecting my wallet a little guys!

Another question, besides head-fi meets (there arent any in my area [NorthWest] coming soon) is there any place to test out a portable amp? Like any retailers do that kind of stuff?

Good luck with that. When I tried to find portable amps around town "in Dallas" people thought I was crazy but your best bet in a high in audio store. Some places that sell high end speak rarely have a headphone and amp setup somewhere in the corner.
