The rule of thumb is to invest most of your budget in transducers, in this case headphones. For the case of the budget in the former instance, a JH3a + bargain-bin source would be a better bet.

Guys any advice? I currently have a rockboxed clip+ fiio e11 and a jh13, what should be my next upgrade? Will a Hisound audio Rocco d power edition improve over the current setup?

Improve your source, ditch the amp.

One of the Cowons or HiSounds will do but don't expect and 'oh my gosh!' upgrade, the Clip+ is pretty good as it is..

Thank you for the advice, but do you mean that the fiio e11 will not increase the sound quality at all?

The JH13 doesn't need an amp. I barely have to adjust the volume on the Clip+ when I switch from the JH13 to the SE530 and TF10 and so on.

The focus here should be on a good source.

melkenshawn, do you want to buy an amp? As in, are you leaning heavily towards one? Because a number of us have already said we don't think an amp will help much, and a number of us who do think an amp will improve things have listed specific models, but you still seem on the fence about the whole thing.

Well the Hisound has less power, no EQ, and no other options other then turning it on and raising the volume. The Cowon has more options in tailoring the sound that you will enjoy listening to. Also the Cowons has videos you can use.

No i do not have any preference. As I prefer to listen to music on the go, a portable set up would suit my needs better. Even though I have learnt alot from you guys about the importance of a good DAC and source, I was hoping if you could give some recommendations for a set up on the go. Thank you so much and I am sorry if i have irritated you.

Amping has nothing to do with volume.

By semantic definition, it has, but it is not the primary endpoint for IEMs (whereas it still is for some power-hungry full headphones), because they don't need volume boost per say.

Most of my headphone, including the HD800, which is one of the most power hungry pair that i have can blow my ears out without an amp, but my ears would be screaming more from the sound quality than the loudness in that case.  IMO the JH13's sound good both with and without an amp.  For me the noise floor is actually lower without the amps i have used but an amp helps the fullness and bass quality of the sound.  Is it worth it to carry an amp.....? in some cases, is it worth is not to? in some cases.  As earlier stated, just out of ease i got the iem version of built in upgraded amps in my HM801 that is called the game amp.  Usually i use that since the 801 is a large dap, but if i use my nano, which was a gift recently, then i plug in the amp.  The only drawback is that non of my older lod's work with it so i have to use the hp output.  I don't know if they have worked on it.  I have looked at the solo and fostex to supplement it but the recession has trickled down to my field now and have some constraints......sucks!  (I am not in the 1%, i chose surfing over law school at the time......but at least i am happy.rolleyes.gif)

:) At least you have the money to fund your passions and enjoy doing what you love. I think that's what counts in life.

Hey guys, just wanted to ask how do you think the jh13 scales up against other headphones amongst the likes of the LCD-2?
