I am using my Monica II dac with pure battery power, WAV saved CD's and some recordings I know well. So far there is no dimension. I will get a hold of Jerry to discuss it.
I suspect something is wrong. Not a single person felt this way about the UE10 or 11, and the 13 is supposed to at least be on par with that. I hope Jerry gets it worked out. The kind of burn in that the cable will get won't be so dramatic to completely turn around what you are hearing.

It may be a burn-in/break in period.

I have a pair of universals (prototypes) here right now from another company that are amazing for the price.

I need to give these time. I listen to so much music that I know what I hear right away. It may be that right out of the box they need time. Everyone said the UM2's, being a balanced armature, didn't need any time but I found, even though I don't care a great deal for them due to poor highs and a fair low freq response, that the UM2's did in fact improve with time.

No I had not heard these before so for me it is quite a leap in faith to go for a 1000 dollar custom IEM but then how do you hear a custom? EVen set up as a universal it still isn't a custom.

I spoke to Jerry and he would be happy to inspect them of course. I will give these some more time but I would be interested on reading others very first impression.

I took out the cable, cleaned the pins and reinserted them. I think some time with sound running through everything is needed.

I am starting to hear a little more clarity to the sound. I just find it interesting, since I have experienced the opposite over many years, that many will say there is no burn-in process to much of anything. Not to start a debate about burn-in here, I have no desire but I know what I hear and have heard. :^)

Agreed, burn in is real and to me it just shows lack of experience for those that say otherwise IMHO.

I've noticed that balanced armatures do burn in - in my experience it takes a much shorter time and the change isn't as big, but who knows with this new design.

I completely disagree that burn-in is either real or necessary with balanced armature IEM's.

I'd be very concerned if I was relying on burn-in (other than the "mental" variety) to make my $1000 customs enjoyable.

That being said, I would give a chance for adaptation to take place. I can't imagine any pair of IEM's is going to necessarily sound more open than your portapros, simply from a design perspective.

LOLZ here we go; i'm sitting this one out

No need for a discussion of burn-in, especially here in this thread.

Any way, they "are" starting to open up more now and the bass is taking on a much better quality. The sound is also getting faster, which means to me, that the bass is getting out of the way of the lower mid frequencies and tightening up. I use a base line of other phones and a set of prototype IEM's that few have heard but are very good. I always go by comparison to others and not my memory. There has to be a baseline to compare to.

Amazing how fast burn-in can happen. Had to say it. The mind is a powerful thing!

Being an ICU nurse besides everything else I do, yes the mind is a very powerful thing and I see the results, good and bad in my work.

To be fair, this is Jamato's first Custom. They so completely fill your ears, that they kind of give you a "stuffed head" kind of feeling. It can be a little uncomfortable at first, and takes some getting used to. But once you're used to it, you simply can't go back to universals and how long it takes to get a proper seal and fit.

It's more of a "feeling" than hearing sound in a way. But it's quite noticeable difference, especially if you go from full sized open headphones to custom IEMs.

While I am not going to speak about physical burn in I absolutely believe it takes time for you to get used to a new headphones signature so it may get better for you over time as you warm up the the cans.

Having customs not fully seated affects the angle and depth which will cause a significant difference in the soundstage and imaging.

I think I'll have to post a pictorial guide sometime.

Ed is there anyway you can take two pictures showing properly seated vs non proper you have me worried that I am doing something wrong even though they sound lovely.

I used to work with Cary Audio quite a bit and I remember Dennis (one of the owners) always saying he never really took a serious listen to his speakers until they had been on for at least an hour with music playing through them and he felt his amps needed at least 100 hours of play time when new and sometimes more. That was pretty much my experience.

Hockey, does yours have a white headphone jack like the other owner's?
