I love hearing stories about the Beatles and their recordings as it reminds me of when my mother was working in Twickenham teaching girls to solder. At lunchtime she would have a half a pint in teh Turks Head pub. She said that many times all four of the Beatles would come in for a drink as they were using studios nearby. I just love the fact that nobody rushed to the press or 'tweeted' about it and spoiled their pint!

Back to topic.

My fear of JH13s left out is that one of my dogs might chew them up. They haven't chewed anything for years but I still fear it.

Should we have a competition for the 'most green clear cables'? Mine have gone past lettuce and heading towards Kermit.

Sound is not suffering but it does cheapen the look of them.

yeah I have never in my life seen a cable go so green so quickly; not even using the stock cables anymore and the clear one continues to get brighter and brighter green. I figure mine is sitting about Kermit too lucky the sound is so brilliant. all the same I would recommend the black cable to anyone ordering. I suspect most people buy the clear one for aesthetic reasons; the cool look fades pretty quickly

Well I used a TF10 cable with mine for a while. It's a shame really because the TF10 cable is streets ahead in terms of finish but makes the JH13's 'Boomy' and 'Veiled' compared to the stock cable.

Would seriously like a better finished cable.

Here's a question about the greening of cables: Couldn't you just remove the cable and apply a few dabs of some sort of the softer silicone of the IEM, and attach the cable to prevent air from getting into the connection?

It is air, right, that's causing the greening?

And, with a soft silicone sealant, an Exacto knife could be used to easily separate the cable again, if needed.

Would that work?

I don't own a JH13, but have the universal UE and I've noticed that clear cable is starting to change colors. I know others are okay with it, but to me it just looks friggin' disgusting.

If you had a goldfish bowl go this colour, you'd clean it.
If you had a girlfriend whose teeth went this colour, you'd leave her.

I am waiting for a sensible clear cable to replace this with.

My diy pin replacement is not going well. More pins needed.
Anyone with a mod cable to sell can PM me.

The pins are easy but it isn't the pin area. The dielectric around the wire allows for minute gas shift of O2 and H20. Oxidization is a pain and copper responds by increasing resistance and creating a diode effect. Silver doesn't do this and silver oxide remains a very good conductor, unlike copper. A thicker dielectric to protect the wire equals a stiffer but longer lasting cable. Also the manufacturing process is very, very important. I have seen new wire with a thick dielectric stripped back with green copper due to poor quality control when the wire was being drawn and dielectric applied.

So that explains why my A+ Silver Ovals, connected "bare-wire" to my speakers have never shown any color change. I always thought my UE wires were silver, but it seems they are not. Color, only, I guess?

In the photos in my flagship custom IEM review last month you can see my ES3X cable is very green, but the JH and UE cables were not. Since then the ES3X cable is greener, and the JH and UE cables have started going green after 2 and 3 months respectively. When I got my ES3X in emerald green I figured the cable would match it soon, but didn't plan ahead for the others. I do have one spare black cable but never felt the need to install it. Someday I will just buy real dead soft silver cables. Right now I find the cables turn green faster if you carry the IEM in your pocket with you.

Evolving impressions after two weeks

I've now had my 13's for two weeks. If anything, the sound quality is improving! I was very impressed at first listen. Then, the "new toy" effect wore off a bit. I noticed that there were some places where I would have wanted a mid or high detail to be a little more crisp and distinct. Last night I did some careful comparisons between my 13's and my Senn 650's. The bass on the 13's is better: rounder, deeper, more solid (but, not artificial or muddy at all). The highs on the 13's are clearer, more distinct than the 650's. In thinking about my desire for some high notes to be even clearer, I recall that these phones are described as "smooth" versus "analytical". I think of HPA's comparison: these are like being in the second row at a concert, rather than right on stage, examining each instrument. If they were any more distinct on the mid and high details, there would probably then be an unavoidable harshness that went along with that, and an overall decrease in "musicality".

Also, my fit is improving. I think now that I've learned to remove them more carefully, my ears are less traumatized, and the fit is better. There is a spot on the left one where I can push the monitor and feel an uncomfortable push on my eardrum. And, whenever I remove the right one, it stretches my ear uncomfortably. But, I can keep them in for hours without discomfort or a loss of the seal.

this would do nothing to prevent the issue. the insulation is slightly porous, so skin oils penetrate and cause accelerated oxidization of the copper. I agree it looks foul
