But aren't custom fit being compared to what "will" be custom fit but with universal fittings? So what are being compared are essentially universals to a custom fit UE10 Pro. I would expect the 10 from Jerry to do better if it were in a custom mold vs a universal. Now if the 13's had been in a custom. . ..

Ah, yes, this little fact slipped from my mind for a moment. Indeed, if we can judge from comparisons made on these boards between the ES3X (customs) and the UM3X (universals), which share the same design and drivers, the difference in SQ can be quite pronounced.

seems there is a typo error at JH website now they change the frequency response to 10Hz - 20kHz for JH13pro. good news for us!

if a universal fit is close to a esw10 then custom fit should beat the esw10.

I was fully aware that I was comparing custom fit to universal when I listened to the jh11 and jh13 but the esw10 is neither. I have the exact discussion with Jerry about this issue at the time and frankly I think I heard 80-90 percent of the sound signature and yes, with custom fit you will get better sound and improve bass because of the bone transmittion. But it shouldn't change the sound signature.

To be honest, when I acquired the esw10 last December, I thought I was done with iem becasue the different was that big. So when I went to LA and tried the jh series, I didn't expect any surprise but after hearing the jh 11 and 13, I am convince that they are capable in matching many good fullsize headphones. But the claim that it can match or even beat the HD800 is still a little far fetch as I have been listening to my own HD800 this past week from a setup similar to headroom (Ultra micro stack with DPS). The jh 13 may equal the HD800 in closeness to the music, but the HD 800 sound stage and ambian and total sound signature is still above the jh series. But then when it comes to portability, the jh has no match.

I do wish that there is a company that can recycle custom iems as I have two pairs of ue10pros. For now, I will still keep my esw10.

One last note of interest from the LA meet is that someone even claim that the hd800 can beat the R10. I have never heard the R10 before, so I went to find a pair of R10 and was able to listen to a R10 connected to a tower of amp (the Singlepower XLR balance setup) for over an hour with many kind of music. The R10 is awesome and at least to me it is still better than the HD800 by at least 20 percent if not more. May be it is the hugh wooden cup, but I felt I was in a perfect sound chamber. It has an unique sound signature that I have not heard from any other phones before in a good way. Sorry for the diversion from this thread.

Headphoneaddict is someone whose opinion I respect a lot. I agreed with him on the Predator and Mustang but I blame him for causing me a pair of hfi-alo 780 (he said it is 90% of the Edition 9, just kidding).

I am totally surprised when he said that he prefers the ue 10 and 11 series over the jh series. Something is wrong here. Either he did not have a good fit at the jh table or he prefers to listen to a very different kind of sound. I have the ue 10 pros from 2003 to 2008 and I am a 1K member on United and medallion member on Delta for those years, so you know how much I travel and I listen on the ue10 pros during those flights. I know the ue 10 pros like my own voice. So when I compare that to the jh 11 and 13, the difference is readily clear to me in terms of my sense of music. With the jhs, I felt much more in vivo whereas the ue10 is a very accurate phone but not as involve as the jhs. The difference is like, if I may use this as an analogy, someone is reading a paragraph from a prepared speech to you as oppose holding a conversation with you and talking to you using the same lines. In both instances the replication is both accurate but one is more involving. It is not because it is brighter or louder, it is the directness and closeness you are to the source. As a result you can sense the nuances of the music and the idiosyncrasies of the performance and performer better. I think a $60.00 SR-60 grado phone will give any music a good replication, but when we spent thousand dollars what we are trying to pursue is that extra sense of realism, we try to modify our relationship to the music so it will start to stir certain feeling inside us and the jh13 just seem to be able to do it better than the ue.

You can't know that without hearing the final custom molded version - the demo is a bad way to make that determination.

If they sound great for you as demos, then they likely will NOT get worse when they are a custom, so I'm happy for you.

hd800 vs jh13

I've heard several who at canjam express that they felt that the jh13 just blew them away or impressed them much more than the hd800. Iron Dreamer expressed similar praise of jh13 over hd800. I know there are a few headfi-er's who have demoed both at canjam and even own the hd800 like headphoneaddict. Can anyone comment on how they feel these two compare.
I know it's apple and oranges but any comment would help. Especially in the area of detail. Which one has more detail? I have the ue11 and hd800 and prefer the hd800 accuracy over the colored ue11 presentation. Does anyone feel the jh13 gives a superior presentation?

I don't want to compare a demo version of a custom to a fully refined full size headphone. When I have some JH 13Pro that are the final product for my ears, I could do that. There are still the sound-staging differences between IEM and full size cans, but it would be fair to compare the timbre/tone, frequency response balance and extension, dynamics and speed, detail and immersion, neutrality, transparency and overall accuracy, etc... All I can say at this point was there were similarities between the two.

I do think that the target goal for these flagship custom IEM is to reach the highest possible performance level as an accurate monitor. Amp and source selection can always be used later to "tune a flavor" into them, should they need to be more "musical" for the audiophile. So, I am looking for accuracy first, and enjoyment often goes along with that. As for the HD800 - I am getting close to 200 hours of 24/7 burn-in on the HD800 (including the 2 days at CanJam as demos), and at this point the HD800 are the only dynamic cans (non-electrostatic) that I have heard that can seriously challenge the performance of the ES3X for uncolored musical reproduction. And I would expect/hope for the same from the JH 13Pro.
