3 months ago I bought a vintage type yami RXV850 Receiver Amp. I have 2, 2way PSB tower Speakers rated for 150watts each and 2 JBL 3 way also rated for 150 each.

It says min RMS output per channel main ( 20hz-20khz 0.015 THD 8ohms / 6ohms. 8 is 80 watts per channel 6 is 95 watts per channell

the middle speakers are indentical then it sats Dynamic power per chanel is 110/ at 6 ohms and 140 at 8 ohms.

I use 4 speakers, all fronts on 6 ohms. I think the loudest this thing has been up to is maybe a bit less than 1/3 of the total power and that was way way loud...like stuff was vibrating.

One other thing. when my stereo is up too loud it shuts off, speakerts and al..is this some sort of shut off relay thingy??

Yamaha is great, PSB and JBL speakers are awsome and so is the ENERGY subwoofer that came with it., there are 2 100 watt each middle speakers as well that I dont use. I paid $50 canadian from a thrift store in vancouver.

Yamaha head office sent me the specs I gave you. When the amp was new it was $1,200American in 1992. oh...6 ohms dynamic headroom is 1.7db

Please tell me what this means if it is any good. thanks..Greg

the speaker impedance you quote is the nominal average across the frequency spectrum of their rating. their will be some places the impedance is higher and some places it is lower, maybe as low as 2 ohms, or less.

now assuming you connected two speakers on each channel in parallel we know the impedance would be cut in half for that circuit. so if at a certain frequency both speakers were at say 2 ohms then you would have only 1 ohm with them in parallel, yes? nearly a dead short.

so the amp is turning off to keep it from burning itself up from too low of an impedance connected across the output terminals. i.e. drawing too much current through the amp.

my guess...

you could i guess connect one set in series across the amp hot leads to play the out of phase signals while the normally connected set played the source.
placing the out of phase set to the room rear for quasi surround, or just use two speakers at any one time. either should correct the problem.

i think using the hot side of each speaker to the hot amp lead then joining the speaker negative leads to complete the series circuit might work for you. the main speakers would of course be connected normally with the series pair jumping across those channels.

or maybe that wont work :}
