Ever wondered what's inside a UE cable? UE connector dissected!

Trying to make a new cable for my Ultimate Ears (UE)...decided to take apart my spare cable to harvest the connectors.

*This is the cable with the memory wire*

Cable carnage?

Left connector:
*Pay attention to the notch on the top where the memory wire slides in. This should be aligned with the L logo on the driver piece for an 'in-phase' signal/sound*

Right connector:
*Pay attention to the notch on the top where the memory wire slides in. This should be aligned with the Rlogo on the driver piece for an 'in-phase' signal/sound*

Memory wire:

Coloured wires:
*YELLOW is RIGHT signal, while WHITE is the LEFT signal*

I'll post some pics of the recable in a few.

I'm curious to see your recable job. I just replaced the clear cables on my UE5P's. The originals developed an intermittent short at the connector that you dissected.

Success…and failure?

Recabled with 4 strands of 26AWG cotton insulated copper wire (SOLID CORE, litz braided). Word of advice, never, ever use it again for flexible application...the cotton insulation unravels and the wire fatigues (since its solid core) and you have a useless cable afterwards. As well, the insulation, because its easy to unravel-too easy, the wires may develop a short at a point where the insulation is gone. Also, kudos to those that do UE recables...the ffing UE connectors are a PITA to solder onto the wire...DON'T ATTEMPT UNLESS YOU HAVE A CRAPLOAD OF TIME. *!^%$*%!$*!$%*&^!$*^!$*

Anyhow, I'll let the pics speak for themselves.

Yeah, I was pretty pissed at this point…..this really sucks. Trip back to UE imminent, my third time back, maybe they’ll let me upgrade to a better pair?

hmmm so memory wire is just a length of wire and not some non fatiguing material. I have to bend each time I put them on, I guess it'll snap eventually? If so I'll stop bending.

If you're referring the my second post, no, that's not the memory wire but the copper wire i decided to recable with. The memory wire is pretty thick and fatiguing isn't a problem with it.

After the time and energy spent, that is no doubt painful outcome.

I had a failure like that while under warranty. One of the connectors popped out of the earphone when I followed UE's directions for trouble shooting. Since that point I've been very careful to insert a blade between the cable and connector to pry them apart.
