Would like to dive into a set of speakers - help!

So I've got a big, fat pile of Graduation money and I've decided that one way for me to use it is to invest in a very nice speaker set that I can bring with me to college (Ohio State).

I'd like to keep it to two speakers. I heard something about some that have built-in amps. I dunno about that. Just point me to some sort of guide or explain what sort of things I should be looking for.

I'm looking at spending between $300-$400

These are powered, fairly compact for a dorm room, are said to sound very good in reviews and posts here and elsewhere and are within your budget.
