Sennheiser HD800 Appreciation Thread - Page 410

Can anyone recommend me an dac for HD800's on a Violectric V200?

I already looked(not listened) at Violectric V800, Audiolab M-DAC, Audiolab 8200 (C)DQ and Atoll DAC 100.

The soundstage is odd on planar phones, being small, but also like 2 walls of sound on the sides of you head. Also I did not like the treble peak of the Omega 2 at around 9KHz(?). Bass was pretty good, but felt body-less. Many of my criticisms of this setup (minus the treble peak) exist in the SR-009 as well. If I were to go stats, it would have to be something like Jades or Orpheus. Warmer, solid bass with the extreme clarity of stats. Soundstage still wouldn't be ideal, but I could manage.
After the March 2012 Austin meet (I had gotten the Stax setup a week prior) I kept it for a couple weeks to make sure, then sold it/returned. I had previously heard the HD800 a few times, but until RMAF 2011 I had not really been that impressed. I decided to go that route after seeing many people who were happy with their UERM also using HD800. The BHA-1 was a later pick up as the WA-6 just could not do the HD800's justice. Recently it won over the Schiit Mjolnir to my ears, though the Mjolnir proved an excellent amp for the money. The BHA-1 may not be worth the premium to others, but it was to me.

That's a refreshingly unique take on the two phones. From the opinions I've encountered it's rare for an O2 listener to take serious issue with that treble peak, though the rise is there, perhaps a tad higher up (~10khz). Is it more bothersome to you than the HD800's 5/6khz spike?

I'm in agreement on the soundstage on the O2s being a little claustrophobic, especially when contrasted by the otherwise solid imaging.

My HD800s don't have as much of a peak at 5k as most do. And yes, the 9-10k peak of the Omega2 made everything sound artificial and somewhat harsh, yet still smooth in an odd way.

Compare to Anaxilus' pair:

I still have mine, but keep them mostly for sentimental reasons, just like my K702s. Both get little time on my head, although the k702 are listened to more often.

It's hard to believe that I actually went through all 410 pages of this thread.

Have gained a lot of insight about the changing trends in regards to how the HD800 has been perceived here in Head-Fi.

Have my own impressions which I would like to share, but want to listen some more before putting it down.

That's awesome.  Do also write about the shifts in perception you observed when posting your thoughts on the phone.

What made you get flat instead of gloss?

Wanted a finish that was similar to the original, just black instead of silver. Gloss might look too blingy or fake. As good as those glossy examples look in pictures, I don't think I would like it in my hand.

OK,

I was hoping it has the same glossy look as the HE-6
