Entry Headphone, Grado Sr80(i) vs Sennheiser HD555 - Page 2

Comfort depends really on the shape of your head. I had the Sennheiser HD590 and have the SR80 and SR325i from Grado. I have a big head and this gives with some HPs problems. The Sennheiser is light and comfortable but clamps a bit. Not too much to get uncomfortable. But the Grados fit rather well on my head and I have no comfort issues with them. All to say that you should go and try them. Nobody here can tell you which sound you like and what is comfortable for you...
I like the Grados sound and I am happy to have bought them.

Well, for gaming, I would personally go for the HD555s... Or check out the AD700s.
For long wearing sessions, I'd go with the HD555s. It barely feels like they are there.
For music, I would go with the SR80s. The HD555s bass seems more bloated compared to the SR80s; that is how I feel.

Something else you have to consider (especially if you are considering portability) is that the HD555s use an 1/4 in. plug and the SR80s have use an 1/8 in..

I am interested in trying out the AD700s my self.

I've been checking amazon and narrowed my decison for a serious upgrade to 2 choices. The grado sr80 ($80ish on amazon) and the senn hd 555 ($80ish as well on amazon). I was also considering the sr60i which is closer to 60ish. I know the 555 has a bigger soundstage for things like movies but I hear the sr80 is more comfortable.

Heres what I use them for, and my criteria. I want ultimately the most comfortable pair becuase I plan to use them for hours on end. Sound quality is also important but between the two I know I won't get something that sounds like crap. I will be listening primarely to movies and classic rock. Please help me with this decision.

EDIT: I wanted to add that I will be using them for gaming specifically CoD games. Also I will not have it amped almost always. I will use w/ ipod touch and pc that has a turtle beach card.
i was in the same boat as you but i was picking between the ad700 and hd555. in the end i went with the hd555s but only based on size and looks. i thought it looked considerably bigger than the ad700. but the ad700s are generally accepted as "better". people say the hd555s are mellow and good at many things... but for what you want, the ad700 sounds better.

i like the hd555s but with the holidays coming and a chance to get a more expensive set, i might go with the hd650s. but i would have upgraded whether i went with the ad700s or the senns.

grados, from what i read, seem to be more limited in their application. they do somethings better than the other two but sometimes not as well... and i feel like (without using them) they wouldnt be ideal for gaming. i feel i went with a right choice... a sort of blanket headphone but i do wanna try grados. not everyone likes them so just be aware.

verdict (without hearing them) go with the ad700 if you dont mind the size and the color scheme.

I'd have the AD700's already if my girlfriend wasn't getting me them for Christmas.

The lower-ended Senns can sound muddy, especially unamped. The AD700s are fast, clean, and crisp with a decent amount of bass.

Of course, I haven't tried either so it's based off of what I've read.

i dont know much about audio yet, but to me, the hd555s dont sound muddy unamped. maybe it depends on what you listen to? listening to jurassic 5 hiphop right now and its pretty clear.

It's purely based off of what I've read.

If I were to buy some Senns, it'd be something a little more high end. Probably some 600s, or maybe 650s if I had enough money.

I understand you're just trying to be helpful, but do you realize just how silly such an authoritive statement sounds when you haven't heard either headphone?

I can't speak to the AD700. As far as the 555's go, in my personal experience:

-Have decent--but not overwhelming--bass response when amped.

-Image accurately.

-Are very comfortable.

I listen to mostly classical and a fair amount of TV/movies. Note I think my 555's right now have been modded beyond far beyond stock. Take it for what it's worth.

i will add my 2c since i own the sr60i and hd555. as other people said: for movies and gamind, go hd555, they are better by a long shot. for classic rock and especially guitars sr60i rulezz. and for someone who intends to wear them for some time, hd555 also by a long shot. sr60i's are a bit trying to the ears. ad700 are supposed to be good, haven't heard them personally.

I just got the AD700s. Comparison time! These are easily the most comfortable headphones I've ever tried, except maybe some mega-expensive Stax. They exert far less pressure on your head and basically just float there. Apparently they have fit problems for some (especially smaller) heads, though. I have a big, sort of V-shaped head and they fit perfectly, but apparently most peoples' heads aren't shaped like that. Soundwise, they're at least as good as the 555s, and definitely seem brighter. The imaging is superb; at least that of the 555s. I have the SR60s, so I can tell you that the SR80's comfort level is nowhere near that of the 555s or AD700s.

i am still torn at getting either the hd-555 or the AD-700's.  i read all the posts on this thread.  mainly i want super comfort and good in gaming/movies/music all around.  i did have the hd-555 with the soundstage mod done to it and i loved it.  i do think the ad-700's would be a little better though and maybe a little more comfortable.  i just hate that purple look on the outside of them.  if i could mod that purple into a black, and do a soundstage mod to them like my hd-555 i would get them.  does anyone have any info on this?  i am sure the ad-700 are just as comfortable as my hd-555 just by looking at them.  the hd-555 for anyone out there worried about comfort, they are the most comfortable headphones ever.  it feels like your wearing a beanie but only on your ears if that makes sense.  thank you!
