is chu moy's original circuit better than an e5?

hi guys,, it's me again... i watched a demonstration/review of e5 in youtube yesterday.. the volume boost is quite noticeable.. for the bass boost, uhmmmm, i cant hear the difference with the bass boost switched on and off..
so i've decided to get a cmoy instead of an e5.. i found a local private dealer near our place selling home made cmoys.. i sent him a text message (philippines is the text capital of the world, lol) asking some stuffs like enhancements in the bass, treble etc etc and he is just confusing me with his answer.. i guess he is just a hobbyist..

i just want to ask you guys (again), are all cmoys the same? does chu moy's original circuit posted in headwize enhances (the bass, treble etc) better than an e5?

thanks

i think the difference is very subtle, but its the size difference that strikes. E5 is very compact and portable.

also, i think you have to approach cmoy from a different perspective- it is supposed to be a DIY project, so the so-called 100% satisfaction from this amp actually comes from you building it yourself. if you judge it from cost and benefit perspective i dont think it is that much of a winner. cmoy will give you another step to understanding how these things work and see whether you can improve it or tune it to your liking.

on the other hand, i can notice differences from my e5- more "effortless" feel to it, more extended bass and a tiny bit improvement on soundstage and imaging. i quite like the results.

bass boost is very noticeable- you said you saw the demo on youtube? of course you can't judge it from there; you have to listen to it and try switching the bass boost around!

all in all i suggest you to just get an e5, it is small and compact, and provides you a bass boost which is like the holy grail for entry level phones.

No, all cmoys are not the same. The parts choice and construction quality affect the sound.

I only listened to a E5 for a short time, I think it is about equal to a cmoy, tha bass boost is a nice feature you don't find in most cmoys and the tiny size is amazing.

From a purist's point of view, amp is not suppose to enhance the sound. Instead, it is the question of which amp being able to present the music with as little coloration as possible after adding the extra power. You shouldn't hear less than what is originally there nor should you hear more.

For the price differnce between the E5 and a CMOY (or other sub-$100 amp), I think you would love the E5. I use the bass boost on it for some of my 60's/70's music that was recorded at lower volume and bass-shy. It is not a boomy bass boost, but clean and nicely noticable.

First off I think the differences are going to be very neligible given each's pros and cons. The E5 adds coloration to the sound FOR SURE, more so than your typical cmoy. However, this isn't to say it exagerates certain frequencies significantly, except for the bass.

I'm not sure what you mean..you can't hear the bass boost in the Youtube Video or in real life? In real life, it is definitely night and day, and it's a real neat feature to have. You can't really judge an amp or headphone sound via Youtube (too much sonic information lost via compression)

I think all in all, I would say the Cmoy would be the stronger of the two sonically, however, it eventually comes down to just sound different. The E5 is great for its size and ease of use.

For a cheap headphone amp, I'd go with the CMoy--it's essentially free to build with sampled parts. Your real issue seems to be cost because if you want to get descent sound qualilty, you're going to have to pay at least a few hundred bucks.
