RIP, Jay Bennett

Just caught the news that Jay Bennett died on Saturday.

I first became aware of him as a member of Wilco and followed his work after leaving the band. What a shame - Bennett was very talented and only 45 years old. I was hoping he'd be around awhile and I had hoped to catch him live one of these days.

This is pretty wretched for fans. Bennett was writing good material for his other projects. There were high prospects for a later-career.

Unfortunately, this is taking on the pallor of one of those great rock'n'roll tragedies. Bennett had taken Tweedy, et. al. to court over royalties for early Wilco albums. Bennett had pain problems from past stage injuries. Nobody has released a cause of death. I imagine that the grief, anger, and recriminations are flowing freely in the Chicago scene today.

Wilco still makes good music, but it hasn't been as good since he was kicked out. He wrote great melodies. I was hoping he and Jeff Tweedy would put their differences aside and make music together again.

R.I.P.

Huh, I was just listening to the new album last night and thinking how much Wilco needs Jay Bennett back.

Sad to hear about it. He seemed to be very well thought of around the C-U area.

For those who saw the Wilco documentary I Am Trying To Break Your Heart before this event, it now has new meaning. It really was already a depressing sight to see him kicked out of the band and completely alone, but his tragic story is now complete. He seemed like a good guy.
