Deciding on Computer Speakers

Hey all,

I'm looking to get a new sound setup for my PC - my Sonys just aren't cutting it anymore. Are there any recommendations for a decent setup up to (around) $400? I was looking at the Logitech Z-5500s, but those look more like gaming speakers to me, whereas I'm going to be mostly listening to music (my gaming days have, for the most part, come to an end). Are there any recommendations out there? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'm in a similar position and have decided to go with powered speakers. I'm deciding between these speakers in the $200 range:

Audioengine A2
Swan M200mkII
M-Audio BX5a (Used)

I don't know if this helps or confuses you more. Heh.

there is a lot of hate towards Logitech on this forum, I have the Z-5500 and love them. I got them at half price at Dell so not sure if I would pay full price, but I have no complaints. They have two different stereo settings (I only use the optical connection) and the headphone setting, though not an amp, works well.

Any real drawbacks to the Logitechs? I'm looking for 5.1/7.1.

Boomy bass and no midrange. If I had the choice at budget of $200, I'd choose 2.0 over 5.1 anyday.

How many sources do you have? Want to use CDP, DVD, MP3 player, PC and other things? Or just the PC?

Not too many sources. I have a PC (with analog & optical) and an MP3 player.

Logitech's are horrible. I have some Z-2300's boxed up in my closet and I'm glad I don't ever have to listen to them again.

ditto iriverdude's comments....at your price point 2.0's are a much better option than 5.1 or 7.1....i have a pair of used m-audio bx8's and later added an sbx subwoofer and it sounds great...some have commented that the av-40's are a good option too
