So, for example, one of these should be ok?
"10 PCS FFC FPC Ribbon Cable For Normal 1.8"CE(ZIF) HDD" cf
10 PCS FFC FPC Ribbon Cable For Normal 1.8CE(ZIF) HDD [10314] - $3.95 : era-ele.com

Disk thickness - have anyone investigated more? Could it be possible to accomodate the 8 mm 240 g, with a few tweaks?

ziteck, would you mind providing some details on your CF installation including what adapter you used and how the install went?

Pics would be great, too, if possible.

Thank you very much!

Both of these ribbons are freely available on ebay for a couple of dollars, so my advice is to buy one of each (sometimes they come in a pack of two one of each) and then you have a cable suitable for whatever drive you use.

to detach the ribbon from the korg motherboard, simply gently pull or push backwards on the small black piece on either side of the ribbon holder, one side, then the other and it simply slides out.
Great tips, thanks dazzer1975! Mine is supposed to show up tomorrow. I'll verify it works and then apart it comes.

It's at least as good as any available portable player on full bit rate CD(probably better). The thing that makes this player better sounding than any current PDAP is that it will play true high resolution music UNCOMPRESSED! This is why many of us are upgrading to higher capacity drives(be they HDD or CF) high rez files are much bigger than full CD rez files. If you are still listening to vinyl, you can also record your Lps to this device & listen to them on the Korg or archive your vinyl to your computer!

yes those ribbons are exactly whats needed, and thats a bloody good price too.

only thing to watch for is the length of them, that might be ok length, I only mention it because as you fold the hdd over into place, the ribbon has to be folded at an angle to kind of offset the player into a more central position as the ribbon connector on the korg mother board is set to one side rather than centrally located.

but I think 2" should be more than sufficient for that to happen

as for the 8mm drive, I suppose it "might" be possible, there is some film applied to the back cover of the korg which may be able to be removed, and by not using the hdd plastic wrap thats already in the korg and no kind of foam protection as it lies on the motherboard maybe, but youd have to sellotape or something the hdd to make sure it doesnt short anything out with contacting the bare components on the board.

I tried my 8mm hdd by wrapping it in the plastic wrap the korg drive is wrapped in, and by placing it on top of a very very thin piece of foam and it wouldnt fit at all.

However, it is possible it could just squeeze in perhaps.

I would urger anyone to get verification of this before they make a purchase of a 8mm hdd though.

I might try it again myself, but until then its safer to assume 8mm wont fit.

review said the sound is good enough to get goosebumps on your first listen on the demo that comes with the player.

Thanks to all contributers regarding hdd change. I've decided to try it, and have ordered the 120gb disk + two variants zif cable from the first ebay supplier that answered my mail....so we'll see.

oghoter, could you let us know which hdd you have gone for please?

And of course once it arrives take some pics of the process if possible so people can actually see it happening kinda thing and expand the resources in this thread.

Cheers.

Since there is doubt if the 240GB (8mm = too thick?) will fit, I ordered the 120GB Toshiba mk1231GAL (5mm), from Lunacommerce.com.

Well, I don't know how true this might be, but I've read in two different places that the mk1231GAL is very finicky & for some reason only works reliably in the Ipod & Zune players. There is a website called RapidRepair that goes as far as to say that, specifically, in their product listing for this drive. I pulled one out of my Ipod Classic that is not installed yet. Both the Ipod Classic & the Zune use a different "film" type zif cable & the motherboard connection does'nt appear to be anything like the zif motherboard connection in the Korg. I have some zif cables on their way from era-ele.com(the 10 pcs advertised in the link posted by someone(was it oghoter?) ) . Hopefully this skepticism is unfounded ,otherwise we might need to search for the Samsung drives(which might even be able to use the existing zif cable anyway!) As soon as someone knows for sure a "heads up" posting is requested, Thanks!

if only this korg has optical out or coax, this will become very perfect to beat iriver ihp100+D10
post #105 of 261
