Industrial Music

Have been a fan for years but never really ventured out from the few major bands that I follow(ed).

Those bands for me were NIN, Ministry, and Skinny Puppy.
Ive tried KMFDM numerous times but could just never get into them as they always sounded really cheesy to me.

Looking for the must have albums of the genre.

Get the re-mastered version of Skinny Puppy's 'RABIES' .. the initial pressing/version was messed up with a really LOW output level or whatever they call it ... They did a nice punchy clear re-master on it a few years ago ...

Front 242 "Front by Front" (and any of their best of kind of discs)

Raamstein , the industrial-rock group from Germany - really good !!!!

Ministry "The mind is a terrible thing to taste" is a must ...

KMFDM is good ... they do have that cheesy remotely poppy thing going on but give em a chance ... the audio quality on some of those albums is really good !!!

Front Line Assembly - various - get these and all others used if you're talking about cd's ... i'm sure you can download everything in mp3 online of course ...
Bill Leeb who is the core of FLA was in Skinny Puppy for a time ... he was a buddy of Cevin and Ogre ... I met he and Rhys Fulber once - very nice guys, fun to hang with ...

I'm probably forgetting a bunch of other worthy groups .. I will post again when I think of it ...

p.s. - the Skinny Puppy albums "Greater Wrong of the Right" (and corresponding live DVD are a must !!! ) Very good sonically ... (as well as the numerous S.P. side projects such as "Cyberactif" (great mastering) ... 'Hilt' is great , a conventional rock sound with touches of extremely druggy/psychedelic stuff going on via Dwayne Goettel's synths ....

BRAP ON !!!@!@

You mean they didn't compress the dynamic range because they thought they might have a use for it?

I saw these guys way back in the day, during the Nihil tour. With Korn and "god lives under water" opening for them. I came away from it with a glowing hatred for both Korn and GLUW - i could not have been more bored by them - but KMFDM put on a really good show.

Agreed that i don't really know what album to recommend though.

Somehow i was never able to get into FLA. It just seemed formulaic to me or something.

I never liked 'greater wrong' - I'm more about Too Dark Park, Rabies, Mind - The Perpetual Intercourse, and Cleanse, Fold, & Manipulate.

One of my faves...

ClockDVA ~ Buried Dreams

They are more experimental but had good industrial segment in their repertoire.

Others that somewhat fit the genre: My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult & Nitzer Ebb.

Yeah, I feel ya ... TDP is quite something and even tho the sound quality on "Vivisect VI" is not great, it's my favorite of anything they did studio wise .

KMFDM FTW. did you try the WWIII album? I liked that one, they have great production values and I love the bass, a lot.

If industrial rock is your thing, be sure to check out 16 Volt. Their 2007 album FullBlackHabit is amazing. New one dropping this fall.

New Pigface out next month also...

And here's a +1 vote for more 242! I only saw those guys live once, but I think it was the best show ever. Danced my azz off.

I probably pimped these in one of KD's other industrial threads, but for everyone else...

16 Volt - Motorskill or Skin - a little bit of darkwave thrown in.
The Clay People - Stone Ten Stiches or s/t (though actually their fourth full length iirc) - these guys hit hard and lean toward metal in spots.
Coil - Love's Secret Domain - more cerebal and downtempo.
Prick - s/t -short lived artist on Reznor's Nothing Records.
Tweaker - 2 AM Wakeup Call - Chris Vienna - formerly of NIN - solo project.

Some pretty nice industrial rock I liked back in the day was Sköld, who I think is now affiliated with KMFDM. He had only one solo album that I know of.

For some industrial-ambient crossover music, try vidnaObmana's Tremor, Spore and Legacy, which comprise the Dante's Inferno trilogy.

I like Tweaker. Have both their (Chris Vrenna's) albums. But I would not at all consider his style 'industrial'. It's pop electronica at best.

As mentioned above these are very worthy:
Front 242
Ramstein
Wumpscut

Also lesser known but still worthy:
Snake River Conspiracy (one album, but a truely great one!)
Meg Chin (connections to pigface)
Hanzel und Gretyl
