Energizer for Stax SR404LE

I have a pair of Stax SR404LE on the way from Japan. I am still unsure which amp to get. Probably I have to buy whichever I choose unheard, because the Stax dealer network where I live (Germany) is extremely thin - and the distributor has not answered my emails requesting advice.

I was assuming I would get the SRM-007tII on the basis of reviews in both US and UK which say it is better than the transistor SRM-727A - more "colourful" without being significantly more coloured.

But as I am also planning to get an Ayre QB-9, which is "zero-feedback", I was wondering whether I should consider the SRM-727A which follows the same technical line broadly speaking. Of course the proof is in the listening, but as said, this purchase will most likely have to be made unheard...

I am aware from lurking here that there are other alternatives, and the KGSS is perhaps interesting (I must have balanced inputs), but most of the alternatives are significantly more expensive than the Stax amps, both of which I can get for about $1800. If there are any alternatives at roughly the same price-point, rather than much higher, I would be interested to hear about them. (I know about the ESC-1001 but don't have a decent power amp.)

all best

Since none of us have received the SR-404LE yet (I have one on the way as well) it is hard to give a recommendation. If they are just a slightly different take on the standard SR-404 then I'd go with a tube amp. I know that prices for new Stax gear in Germany are nuts so you should be looking to buy used, the older amps are also better then the new ones. The 717 is the best amp that Stax has made in the last 15 years (far better to my ears then the 727) so that would be a good place to start but so are the old T1 amps.

There are also some German diy amps (highamp.de) which you could be able to find.

Thanks for your very useful response. I have found that there is already a thread running on basically the same topic, so will move there:
