Good Surge Protector. Is it worth it or something else?

I am just a newbie at this and trying to make a nice set-up for myself. Should I get a good surge protector? Is there anything worthwhile under $100? Will it make a big difference? is there something I should be getting first power wise (have good cans, and decent amp and DAC)?

Thanks,

made a difference in my system, then again I live in NYC where electricity is just plain horrible.

I would save the money for another upgrade, unless as noted above, you live somewhere where power is unstable.

It is good to have a surge protector to protect your equiments! I use a cheap one (APC) for safty. Some conditioner/power strip comes with surge protection as standard.

To the OP - are you looking for something only to protect against voltage spikes / power surges / brown outs etc, or are you after something that addresses line noise / RF? If the former, then as others have said a surge protector is almost certainly of value. If the latter, then you might be after a different beast (power conditioner). Some products will do both of course, and there seems to be a fair bit of knowledge here about those. I live in an old house, with old wiring - or not well-thought out circuits at any rate - and filters have been a godsend for me because they get rid of obvious background noise...

Thanks so much for your responses and help. I actually also live in NYC and in a somewhat older building (not pre-war, but not much after either). Right now I am using a $20 surge protector I bought at staples. I guess I am looking for something to give me a cleaner line to improve the sound quality of my system (and I guess help eliminate some background noise if it can do that). Should I look into a power conditioner or just get a better power strip? I was looking at the Furman PST-6 Power Station Surge strip. If I should be looking at a conditioner, is there a decent one under $100?

Thanks again for all the help.

Also, forgot to mention, I also have a firestone supplier unit hooked up my headphone amp, so that is at least helping to give that a decent power supply at the moment.
thanks again.

I also have the Supplier, hooked up to my Fubar dac (big improvement on the wall wart).

I'm sure if you do a search on this forum you'll find all sorts of recommendations, although I have heard good things about the Belkin PF30 which appears to be within your limit - just. Check that out maybe - you'll likely find someone, somewhere has it marked down. Good luck

The Supplier is a BIG improvement. I am going to look around and also take a closer look at the PF30 (I wonder if it would be overkill for my humble system though). Thanks for tips.
