Denon AH D2000 or Denon AH D5000 ????

Hey - I'm totally new to headphones. I haven't had a pair since I was on Okinawa in 1973 (I'm 54). I've done a fair amount of research and have decided that I want either Denon D2000's or D5000's. I'm looking for all the comments I can get to help me decide if I should spend the extra $180 to get the D5000's or not. I can get the D2000's for $225 and the D5000's for $405.

I have a fairly good stereo setup. I have a Pioneer SX-939 receiver, Pioneer HPM-60 speakers, and a Pioneer PL-530 Turntable. I'm kind of a vinyl collector and all the music I'll be listening to will be vinyl. I'll be getting a nice reel-to-reel in about a year, but for now it's all vinyl. I'll be plugging the headphones right into the SX-939 receiver.

Now I know as soon as I put on the cheaper D2000's I will be totally blown away. I'll think - WOW!!!!! these are awesome. Holy Moly!!!!!, etc. etc. and if I never hear the D5000's I'll never know the difference. I'm not the kind of guy that collects lots of hardware. Which ever pair of cans I get - I will end up keeping them forever, and that will be that. So why should I get the D5000's?

If it makes any difference, I listen to all kinds of music. Jazz (Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, Chick Corea, Charlie Parker), blues (Albert Collins, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker), classic rock (Pink Floyd, Clapton, CSNY, Rory Gallagher), classical (mainly violin conertos - Vivaldi), and what I call "standards" (Tony Bennett, Sinatra).

So is it worth the extra $180 to get the D5000's ?????????????????

That's a dangerous assumption to make with ANY headphone. If you've never heard the D2000, you might as well start off with the cheaper headphone, and IF you still have a desire to get better sound, like the Denon house sound, *AND* the rest of your system is of high enough quality, then the D5000 is worth it.

welcome to headfi db297 use the search button to search skylab's head to head comparison of d500 regular d2000 and a modded d2000 and youll get your answers. i was using my stereo receiver as headphone amp before and it served me well foe a while but dont totaly put out the possibility of purchasing a dedicate hp amp in the future.

To the OP, are you located in the US? I got my D7000's from J&R for around $525 shipped. I had to be patient until they came in stock but they have made me forget my recabled D2000's and MarkL modded D5000's. I listen to mostly rock, classic rock, metal, punk, goth and power pop. I adore Grados and am also sort of a bass head. I enjoy the D7000's right out of a Shanling CD player or out of a Marantz CD player hooked up to a Zero DAC/Amp or an Eddie Current Solid State amp. I'd rank these up with my favorites (JVC DX1000, MS Pro and ESW10JPN) for pure enjoyability.

BTW, I listen to a lot of Sinatra, Bennet and Martin. The vocals are magical.

Hey Lutwey - thanks much. I found Skylab's review and made up my mind. I'm going with the D2000's and then I'll be able to upgrade them like Skylab did some time in the future.

if what people are saying is true then d2000 should be a bargain at their price. i should receive mine in a day or two so we'll see.

Yes it is worth the extra money. The mids and highs are better on the d5000s. I thought the d2000 was okay but when I put on the d5000, I immediately wanted a pair

I recently bought a pair of stock d5000 and i could not be happier. My current fav cans. They really have that 'wow' factor when you hear them for the first time. So much so my brother heard them once and ordered himself a set!!

I just bought a pair of D2000's and I love them. These are the best headphones I have ever had.
