Are hp stands necessary?

Why do people use headphone stands? Will headphones be damaged if they are just set down on a table? I have the audio technica ad700, should I make a stand?

I don't personally see any point in using a headphone stand. I prefer to keep all of mine carefully stored in an enclosed bookcase to keep them free of dust. My house is virtually dust-free as it is since I have a mechanical air exchange system with very good filtration, but I figure no dust is just a bit better than almost no dust.

I have a pair of HP2 cans - without a stand, either the velour pads are going face down on the table, or the back of the cans are on the table. Dust bunnies or scratched housings, take your pick.

They are certainly not necessary.
But they are a nice way to place your 'phones, with less risk of damaging the pads, headband, and like.

Stand + dust core = crucial headphone accessories imo.

it keeps them a little cleaner, saves desk/table space, and puts them on display

Plus less chance damaging the paint work etc. Just get something inexpensive.

I've never thought of not using one. That or a camera bag for transport/storage.

I think when you get enough headphones, a stand is really neat, it keeps them in one place.. I used to have 6 cans just laying on top of my desk (with dust-protection mind you) but its so much nicer to have them all on a stand.

When you like your headphone enough, you wouldn't want the pads to be sitting on the table when you're not wearing them. They deserved to be hung in the air.

Not necessary, but definitely REALLY nice to have. You don't need anything fancy (probably should be proportional to the cost of your headphones), but anything where they're hanging and not resting on the desk is important to keep the condition nice.

Depends on how your headphones look like

I need to get some of the shelf clamp headphone hooks. The stands take up too much desk space

That can be a problem if you don't have a safe/protected surface to place the headphones on. As you can see in this picture, my Grados are safe and sound in the dust-free bookcase I mentioned earlier. They don't have velour pads, of course, but if they did I would just put a fine piece of linen on the surface of the shelf. I don't know how well the picture shows it, but my headphones are as free of dust as they could possibly be, and since I place them down gently rather than slide or drag them, there's no risk to scratching either the shelf or any part of the headphones.

In this next picture, my beyers are resting quite contentedly atop their plush leather case on the next shelf down.

The last thing I would want is more gear on my desk, so taking a couple of minutes to properly put away my headphones after each usage is well worth it to me.
