As kind of an update to yesterday's post - I came home after letting the amp/701s burn in a bit more, and even after 8 hours, I am absolutely shocked by how much better it sounds. Everything seems so well placed on the soundstage, and I can hear each instrument individually. I can tell now what wasn't recorded at the same time during a performance. Really, truly amazing. I can't wait to hit the 500 (or even 1000) hour mark.

This is with an iPod, too. Once I get a DAC I'll be running lossless through my MacBook Pro.

Excellent! Hopefully in 2 to 3 weeks time the bass will appear too, the amount will ultimately depend on your amp of course. It can get very good deep bass but not necessarily enough mid bass though.

As for music format, you could go for WAV files using EAC (a software for making perfect copy which you could download for free). Also there are nice 24bit music downloads that you can get buy, i.e. Chesky, Linn etc which is probably the only way to get 100% perfect master tape quality copy.

Hello again.
I have had my K701s on burn-in for aprox. 150 h and they do improve significantly, the bass is more present and the treble is much more controlled/not as harsh.

I was looking around for european amps suited for these great cans and came across this:
Harmony Design EAR 90 (1W/30ohm, 6V RMS), a swedish handbuilt amp that in reviews surpassed the X-Can v3, Pro-ject head-box, Rega EAR and Vincent KHV 111.

Now I am considering buying this little beauty, but haven't read anything about it coupled with the K701s and was wondering if it would be suited to drive them as they deserve?

I will be using the Essence as source and probably do some op-amp rolling to further improve the already great sound.

hi, sorry to bump this thread. i didn't get the CanAmp in the end because of too many issues regarding the build quality. instead i've been slowly saving up for Lehmann Audio Black Cube Linear. few day earlier i noticed that there is Rudistor NX-03 for sale for good price. what do you guys think of it? does it have a good synergy with K701? i checked their website and it didn't say anything about the power supply. i guess its off the wall power supply, right? there doesn't seem to be one inside.

There most definitely is a PSU built-in.. else that transformer is sitting there just to add heft.

I like the audio gd c2c with my k702

i read good things about C2C, but i want to buy amp that sells in EU (no customs and vat) any thoughts on NX-03? built-in psu is a good thing i guess.

Built-in PSU is fine as long as the electric fields from it doesn't mess with the circuitry. A lot of high end hp amps like/need to break the PSU out into another enclosure like the GS-X, RSA's amps, etc. On the other hand amps, preamps, etc. are 99.999% internal too. I guess it's up to the engineer.

Hi dex85,

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Shanling PH100 is probably on par with Lehmann.
A few years ago, before my hiatus from Head-fi, the Lehmann and GX-1 were at the top of my list, in the interm as a Head-fi member I got one of the Headfives from Meier.
Knowing that Shanling, respected for producing quality products out of China and also chosen by Meier to manufacture headphone amps under Jan's specifications, I grabbed one of thier Ph1000's when it came up awhile back.
Just recently I've been pairing it with the K701's and can report that the duo do indeed work extremely well together, top end is smooth and extended, good imaging and layering with a tight and deep base, it also is doing a similiar job with the Senns and Grados.
Just my too cents worth.

thanks for the input, price of Shanling is appealing, especially if its on par with BCL. but again, i think i'll pass on opportunity to drive long distance to capital to pick it up and deal with jerks from customs
i had a word from NX-03 seller, he has bought K701 recently. according to him K701 synergy with amp is so good that he's thinking of withdrawing his sale offer. i hope he changes his mind.

It's good for what I payed but have not tried it with AKG's yet.
Of course you won't have to worry about customs, etc.
As I wrote in another k701 amp thread, I find the Novo + k701 an excellent choice for classical because of its neutrality and transparency. And because of that it may not be as suited for rock, but that depends on the listerener's preferences, of course. The combo is certainly flat and reveals all the glitches and imperfections the recording may have. (The DAC I use is CIAUDIO VDA-2, all PSUs are aftermarket walwarts.)

Having had the Solo SRG and the Rudistor NX-02 I can say that both have a good synergy w/ the K701. So whichever is cheaper and fits your cabinet is what I would get.

My vote is Heed Canamp...

Incredibly aggressive and detailed, and really brings out the nuances in the music. =) Thus I got it. I tried out many other headphones... They do often sound a bit lacking and slow in details, though smoother in many sense.
