MB Quart QP 805 HS

I just got a pair of these. With standard ear pads the mids are muddy and horrible, but I tried the pads from my DT990 pros and they were much better, much clearer, too early to give any meaningful impressions (and I've not had a lot of time with better kit than my DT990s), but they sound nice.

Has anyone else tried these cans with Beyer pads? I want to get some for them but I wonder whether 770 or 990 pads would be better?

Were your stock pads stiff? I found If I pushed down on the cups, to make the seal better on the stiff pads I tried; it was a v.nice sounding can.

They are quite stiff, they're previously unused, the seal seems goodthough. They do sound really quite nice with the beyer pads, it doesn't seem like a seal problem, I can see the point of these cans. I expect some burn in might not hurt either.

I gotta say I didnt find it muddy....it had v.smooth treble compared to most dynamics (maybe not sharp enough for some but I found it much more palletable).

Once I achieved seal, it was pretty clear all around, and had good bass.
One of the nicest dynamics iv tried. Supposedly indestructible as well!

Perhaps I should persevere with stock pads and see if it comes up to what I'm getting with the beyer ones (which is nice), the bass is a bit shy of neutral actually at the moment (I ran some frequencies through them with 'audio test' on my mac), but that's fine with me and may change with burn in I guess.

I only payed £17 for these things delivered, and for that money they're spectacular already.

I only spent one day with them. So i dunno if the pads change over time. Yup, you got a steal of the century, these headphones have the SQ in the range of hundreds of pounds.
Quarts are usually pretty pricey anyway.

When you say shy of neutral, do you mean its over or under the neutral line?

I meant a little under neutral, which is no problem for me at all. I'm mainly listening to jazz - cool, bebop, hard bop... some vocal jazz, some classical music, and it's only with this kind of stuff that the blurry muddy mids are a little apparent with the stock pads. I changed back to stock and will give them a chance to settle down, they're not so bad that I dislike hearing them, it's just that I'd like these cans to sound as good as they can.

Lecky, try pressing down on the outside of the cups with stock pads on. So the seal becomes totally PERFECT.
You should hear a BIG change in the bass.

Unfortunately it doesn't make a significant difference... But actually I's rather the bass be a little shy than too prominent, and it's only a little shy, and may yet not even be that with more burn in.

Wow, you're even more of a basshead than me ! Anyway, enjoy the cans, even at 5 to 10 times the price you would'nt have done much better.

I wonder how much they differ from these.

Exact same housing, different pads (round circum, not unlike Beyer). 2x100Ohm.
When I sealed the pads to my head, then that description above it all kinda rings true, so i'd guess they arent exactly the same (due to the pads and driver), but in the same family of sound.

Are these the indestructible pair?

The pads on my QP 805 HS are similar to beyer pads, a fair bit deeper than my well worn DT990 pads, and covered in a mat plastic that looks like rubber, they're soft and comfortable enough though.

As Kabeer says the MB Quarts are 100 ohms (although Google turns some up advertised as 300 ohms) whereas GermanMaestro are 300 or 35 ohms.

The HS stands for High Solid, which is their way of saying indestructible.

Kabeer, these headphones seem to have been burning in and improving anyway, but I just had the revelation that you're completely right - I took off my glasses and the seal suddenly worked and the bass is right and they're clearer in the mids, and they're really very good! I completely forget that I wear glasses except in that they get uncomfortable under lots of headphones. A big thanks to you!
