I have my hands ON the Sony X1000 Walkman - Impressions / Discussions - Page 31

@techfreakazoid,

Possible reasons for limiting video support at QVGA:
1. H264 is more cpu intensive than MPEG4
2. QVGA can be considered as standard video resolution

All I can say at this time is that the demo videos that come on the player play perfectly on the X with no apparent frame drops...

I am almost certainly going to be getting the dock that records from tv tomorrow, so on the assumption I do, then I will be able to post more accuretly regarding stretching or cropping, and apparent frame drops

"Your order for Sony Walkman X Series NWZ-X1060 32GB OLED MP3 Player has been posted"

This is from Play.com... fingers crossed it should arrive tomorrow.

EDIT: I actually thought the placticky layer was a screen protector so I tried to peel it off...
alright. Sony is topping S9 on sound but the glass screen of S9 is really tempting me. Can't decide can't decide

Has the Sony got a plastic screen? I hope not...Especially after the price they are charging.

Glass may be more scratch resistant (although that isn't neccesarily the case with some plastics out there!) - but, it is far less shatter resistant than plastic..

Oh and another thing...Do you think Sony will support a lossless codec in the form of a firmware update?
I think they also missed a trick by not including an expandable memory slot...
After converting most of my library to VBR AAC, im left underwhelmed because FLAC still sounds world's apart...Im wondering how these AAC files will sound on the Sony?
Im torn between the D2 and the X series...D2 seems to tick all the boxes.
Any opinions?

Nice one Stimpy! Let us know if it shows up tomorrow. I've never had anything arrive the next day from Play!

Duncan-
My left ear finally 'popped' this morning after a 2-day blockage - and now I can hear clearly, so clearly that I was able to turn the volume down by 3 notches on the Sony/FX1000. I have a feeling that phones worn straight down are causing a build up of pressure, because I never have this problem with over the ears.

Anyway, having spent the last hour with the Sony/FX1000, I'm beginning to enjoy them a lot. I plan to spend the whole afternoon with them and get a proper feel for them in unblocked ears

It's highly unlikely. The only firmware updates I've had on previous Sony daps were to fix issues like crackling (on the 829), and something else I can't remember for the 808. But I've never had an update that added a feature.

Mine sound great on the Sony.

If you're having second thoughts, then you should definitely wait and get more opinions, unless of course you can get your Sony from somewhere with a decent returns policy. I've never had the D2 so I can't comment, but I'd read enough about it to know (well, almost know!), that it wouldn't be a sound I cared for. If you need/want lossless support, you're not going to get it from the Sony except with WAV/PCM files.

I look forward to your impressions soozieq (I'm hoping that the pressure build-up is totally unrelated!!)...

I've re-ripped some of my (CD) albums with DBPoweramp into the AAC 400kbps format... not sure if it is technically better than 320kbps, or if it is padded (but I will assume the former...) - Either way, I still can't get enough of this combo...

...And, the more I re-read the impressions of the FX500, I am getting more convinced that the FX1000s, whilst having the same underwritten sound signature, probably are different devices... I certainly cannot hear the mids being recessed when compared to the IE8 - totally the opposite (which I believe you agree with me on...)

...Oh, and - as per my post above, I ordered the TV dock thing a couple of hours back from Amazon (along with a DVD-A disc, going to see what the maximum resolution I can rip onto the X1000 is...).

Oh, my aching wallet!! (Sony had better not announce a 128gb flash X2000 in the near future, or I might just scream...!!)

Duncan, i read elsewhere on the forum that you put your D2 up for sale? Was it not that good then?
PrinceOfEgypt...

I have various problems with its sound quality - The way the volume control isn't linear, that there are too many options to tailor the sound, none of which suit my ears...

I also don't particularily like the touch screen of the D2...

...Maybe I just bought it on a bad day, and never gave it any love - although, even now, I still cannot... - Just not for me...

Me too, but I have a feeling it's related to the different angle of insertion. Mark loaned me his RadioPap Pop last week (worn straight down) - and after a few hours I had terrible pressure build up. And yet I'd been using the W3/IE8 before with no pressure at all. I had the same problem with C700's eventually, and then just recently with the FX1000... so l'll keep my fingers crossed that the 3LB of pressure that just popped out doesn't come back

I don't know if it's better either, but all my varying formats sound equally good. The only problem with AAC is that WMP can't see the files, and I think I messed things up by using 2 different methods of transfer, ie; Explorer shows me a different remaining capacity to WMP and some albums don't appear in Explorer, but they do in WMP. Strange, but I'll figure it out at some point.

Don't worry, we'll all be six feet under by the time that ever happens

Oh, and if anyone's experiencing a quirk whereby album art doesn't show up, I figured it out. I had the same problem with the Sansa Fuze and stalked the appreciation thread for a while until I read that jpegs have to be saved in 'Baseline (Standard) - not Baseline Optimized or Progressive. So I weeded out the suspect covers on the Sony, saved them in Baseline Standard and now they all display!

Thanks for the quick reply Duncan.
How are you finding the Sony so far in terms of Sound quality and usability?
Sound quality is great PrinceOfEgypt... as is most of the menu structure etc...

The only one slight quibble I have - I always search by album, but - whenever I add, or take away tracks from the the player, and it rebuilds the library, the first search always reverts back to song / artist (I forget which now) and I have to change back to album view... Other than that, no problems at all...
