NAND Flash are by Samsung (part no: K9MDG08U5M-ZCB00) and are based on MLC technology. Flash memories with MLC technology are cheaper to make due to its higher density, but they are also slower than SLC memories.

that's why it won't handle divx or lossless like the competitors ... pretty weak to me ... sorry sony, but that's not competition
although it's the best sounding out of the box pmp it surely isnt't packed as it's competitors ... if apple would put an oled screen on it's touch that would really kick ass
one more thing ... maybe the next PSP would have smth to do with it's specs?

Duncan, apparently you can test whether or not it's glass by taking a coin to it and scratching it... glass shouldn't scratch. But there's no way in hell I'm testing that theory, how about you?

P.S I can supply the coin!

EDIT: I actually thought the placticky layer was a screen protector so I tried to peel it off...

So, will there be a normal comparison between cowon s9/touch/p3 in SQ terms with this walkman, 3-6 english tv's were saying that they "will take this thing to their labs to test", however those testings seems to be delayed or what? Personally i was in london last weekend and got a chance to play with this one, however if 3rd gen touch gets a 64gb/Oled/1,5x better battery and cammera i think only sony fanboys will buy this one.
P.S. browser sucks so badly.

Ya no one here expected the browser to be anything but basic. It's all about the sound with this one. if you want web and apps definitly get a touch.

HOW can you say it Sounds better without independant testing? I don't just mean freq response graphs BUT ALSO an independant objective comparison written by somebody who has'nt spent OVER $400 on the device they are reviewing. If i spent over $400 on a mp3 player I would naturally want to justify my purchase!

Well the people that are posting impressions here have a lot of experience with many many Daps, and would pretty much tell us if the sound was rubbish. And the verdict so far has been very positive, plus if they didn't like it they could just return it- no need to justify a purchase.

Your not going to get sugar coated bull**** around here, maybe new toy syndrome or FOTM. But when people I trust say it sounds better than some of the top daps for SQ, that holds more weight than any testing or "pro" reviews. YMMV

Also, if there are any comparisons of the S9 and the Zune, you can then note Duncan's comparison of his Zune to the X1000 and that will help too.

How is the S9 supposed to stack up to Zune SQ anyway?

I have no allegiances or otherwise, that isn't in my nature, i call a spade a spade, just check my aged PCDP review in the featured section, if that doesn't show i can be impartial, nothing will, especially when I marked down some of the really big hitters of the time.

If i post that i like something, its because its good, i have no agendas, don't work for Sony or otherwise... You will also find that personal experience is often more credible than 'facts and figures'.

Hope that clears that one up

£290 is a hell a lot of money for me to spend on anything, much less a portable music device, so if I like it I'll share my experience. I do not even have to justify a purchase if I am not happy with it - I can just bring it back to the shop and return it (not fit for purpose). I have done so plenty of time in the past when I was shopping around for portable MiniDisc players and PDAs, and have almost been banned once from a Dixons store.

I had an S9 for a while when I had my zune. I liked the sound of the S9 a lot with the VIVA BBE effect. But without sound enhancements it sounds a lot like a d2- bass roll off, cold and thin and small soundstage. The zune has better dynamics and a wider sound stage then the S9, and is more "alive" sounding. BBE VIVA adds all the bbe effects in varied amounts, so you get more dynamics, bass, and a wider soundstage. Both have great detail and resolution, well at least compared to the clip/fuze and touch 2g.

But the post processing does add distortion and lowers battery life, so I would say that the "base" sound output of the zune is superior IMO.

Ihatepopupads-
Thanks for the SQ description. I remember how Cowon D2 and I7 sound, and if the S9 is the same, I wouldn't like it. Good to know how it compares to Zune too.... since we know how Duncan's Zune fares in comparison to the X1000- not well.

I couldn't give tuppence about defending anything, and I never have. The only thing I truly expect from Sony is good sound. User-friendly browsing would have been a nice bonus, but it didn't happen, big deal - I can either return it for a refund, or I can enjoy the sound. I'm not returning it.

While SQ is probably the primary criterion for most Head-Fi'ers, I'm sure there are users interested in the video capabilities on the next-gen of OLED PMPs. The NEC MP201 application processor seems ill-suited for the X1000's 3.0" WQVGA (432x240) screen. Here's the verbiage off their Web site:
The MP201 includes an advanced DSP module and can display 30 frames per second of QVGA video using the H.264 data compression format.
It also includes a function for displaying 30 frames per second of 480 × 480 MPEG-4 compressed video. As such, the MP201 represents a significant advance for digital audio players, video recorder/players, and other portable devices that will be able to download the latest audio content or receive mobile terrestrial digital broadcasts.

Since QVGA is 320x240, is some scaling going on to fill in the missing 26,880 pixels (112x240) for properly-sized videos? What the heck is 'includes a function for displaying 30 frames per second of 480 × 480 MPEG-4 compressed video'? The Cowon S9 has a larger 3.3" 480x272 screen and I'm curious how it scales / processes properly-sized or larger video files.
