I was a late adopter - didn't get my X til last November, but it's been worth every penny.

Don't know what daps you have had before or currently have, myself i have had a Cowon D2 16gb dab, Sony A818, A829 & Touch 2nd gen 32gb and for me it is a large step above the Touch in terms of SQ.

Even though this player oddly has a warm slant to it's signiture which is strange for a digital amp player the detail, seperation, layering, transparency accurate reproduction of instruments give this player a very slick tempo to music and is the only dap so far i have not got bored of the sound several months later.

To me it always sounds fresh and listen to this for hours without realizing sometimes which is testomany for me how much i love this player from a SQ POV and cannot wait to get my jH13/16 pros to go with this.

Currently listening to it with my AKG 702's with ALO SXC cable through a Naim Headline amp with NAP SC power supply which sounds with the X in it's dock with a line out ALO SXC lead and sounds natural, fluent and wide and awesome!

However this player is not without it's drawbacks depending on what you want from it, ie; crap browser (improved with F/W upgrade - still is no Safari on a Touch though!) and even though i find the User Interface good, but not "out of this world" it is subjective depending on what your used to and there are some other areas users do not personally like which i cannot remember as it does not bother me as at the end of the day Sony do and done a Walkman which they excelled in doing that plays music to a new level for a dap and the rest was just a after thought they felt obliged to include them to compete for the Touch market and failed on first attempt which no doubt will be possibly be addressed with the "X" Mk2

So if you are solely after the SQ it is worth every penny even when i payed £230 for it last year, but as an all rounder then no, where the X fails the Touch excels and vice versa.

Lastly you do not need EQ with this thing, it sounds best how Sony intended it to be, if you are using high enough sample rate, ie - wma, aac & wav, not crappy mp3's!

I know i used the Touch as a direct comparison there, but to get a good sound out of the Touch i had to have it through a lod going through a £600 amp and became a reference listening post and not a portable dap which was not good enough in my view, the Sony X sounds like you have a porta amp already strapped to the thing it sounds that good with it's on board digital amp.

So yes, get the thing!

Im gonna pick up a case from pdair.com for my guy, almost dropped it twice on concrete and dropped it about 3 ft onto my desk. Can this guy take quite a bit of abuse? i dont wanna take any chances anyways. I find the player pretty slippery without a case so im probably gonna pick up the silicon one cause it gives the best grip. Ya the metal would look better but itll get marked up anyways and its going to be just as slippery.

I disagree. The default settings sound good but lack bass. I do +2 on the extra bass and bump a couple sliders up 1 setting in the SQ to add some treble. It sounds miles better now than it did when i first got it.

Depends what you are listening to it with i suppose, but in my view with good source material worth it's salt and with either of the following iem's Shure SE530's (which are bass light iems in their own right) and Senn IE8's and my JVC FX500's especially i find the X does not need more bass.

I had the Cowon D2 which sounded to me flat and needed tweaking to bring it to life which took me forever to perfect, hence why i parted company with it within 8 months, but at the end of the day i am one for beiing a pursit and not wanting to taint a good source recording with an EQ giving it a false sound to the original recording and i feel it negates for me why i am spending a lot on the soon to be JH13 pros which are meant to be the best and very natural sounding custom iem around at the moment to discolour it with an EQ which would be contradicting what these customs could do i feel.

If this was the case and i felt i was having to use EQ on a dap like my Cowon was i simply show it the door and find the perfect player for me that can produce the sound i want without reverting to tweaking EQ settings.

What iems do you use? are you happy with the iems you are using with your's, it may possibly be them rather than the player perhaps?

I listen to my X also through the Sony dock with a line out into my Naim amp with my AKG 702's which are not renound for plenty of bass a bit like the SE530's are also, but when needed as to the recording requires it can still kick ass with bass at nuetral on the X and i am used to listening to the FX500's which are pretty much one of the bassiest iems around.

Just my opinion anyway

wav files can't be tagged with album art.

I use the EQ on my X - What's the point in having it otherwise? Same with my i9.

er.... pretty much for the reasons i outlined above, reason for why my D2 went.
Know what you mean though, but feel in a technilogical advancment with daps now days there is no need for them. Not as if it is still 1986 with a cassette walkman for those who remember. lol

That's just subjective opinion - yours.

I got rid of my D2 because it was fugly, it sounded ok.

All my WAV files transferred with tags and album art, every single one.

Here's an example.

It's not compulsory to use the EQ unless you feel your phones could use some tweaking.

It's nice to have though just in case

Shigzeo
- so the 840 series is really skinny? I remember looking at the measurements and thinking it was even thinner than my A808, and that felt skinnier than an After Eight!

Exactly, that is why i said it ; )

Fugly, i take it you mean ugly? it was no mona lisa the D2, but i would not chuck it out of bed if it sounded good, the dream SQ (if i had the $$$) would be a Hifi Man and that makes the D2 look like a Ferrari! lol

He meant "********* ugly," hence fugly

My apologies - I thought wav couldn't be tagged.

If I didn't want an EQ or sound enhancements I'd be as well off owning a Zune or ipod.. To me it defeats the purpose of having them there if I wasn't going to use them. Even ie8s can use some tweaking.
