I have my hands ON the Sony X1000 Walkman - Impressions / Discussions - Page 13

Thanks Walkingman - appreciate quick reply. IE8's are quite low impedance -think my Ety's are 30ish ohm - so shouldnt be a prob. (and as you say - very very slight and not while music playing reassures me !!)

Thanks.

just as a reminder, spec especially for power is very subjective. just as in power amps that often read way above their actual rating or are hidden within a different rating system, i would not worry about 5mw per channel.

my sony players are always as loud as my ipods if not louder. where they start to lose steam is with headphones, not iems as the sound gets a bit thinner. however, if all things we equal, i would reckon that you could rate and ipod at 30mw and a sony at 20wm at least.

walkingman...

Apologies if you've already posted a comparison - this thread is too hot for me to keep on top of...

Anyways, I would like to see if your opinions are the same as mine that the X1000 is much cleaner sounding, with much better seperation (noticeable at both high and low volume), and the other easy thing for me to pick up is that imo the X1000 is [c]leaner in the midrange than the A818, making for a much less fatuiging listen (not that the A818 is fatuiging!)

Also, as a direct comparison between the two, the X1000 has an almost inky blackness between notes etc (although the JVCs are only rated at 100db/mw so not the most efficient out there!), which makes the A818 almost sound like a tape player...

This is solely using the FX1000 earphones... I will try the IE8s later...

I would like to see if your thoughts follow my own...

Oh, and apologies for quoting seemingly inaccurate information re volume caps... I must confess that using the Discmen and radios from the early '00s convinced me that Sonys generally were gutless... obviously not

Please... Don't!!

As mentioned in my thread about them in the IEM forum, these are almost certainly re-badged FX500s... so, if you do want to - grab a pair of those instead (for a whole lot less cash!!)

Soozieq...

Shame about the serial number - but, like you say - it is still below 2800, so - more than probably a JPN version

Yeah, I did write about it having a cleaner sound compared to my S739. Instrumental seperation is better. Going between the two these past few days, I do find that the X1000 is noticeably better overall. Not that the S739 are bad. It is just amazing how much improvement Sony has managed to get out of the X-series. I sold off my A818 back in December, so any comparison would be only based on memory.

A very brief opinion for you

Tonally, the Sony has a richer midrange, which makes vocals sound more lush, bass is tighter, crisper, and that same darkness between the notes is still apparent on the X1000 in comparison to the Zune...

Other good traits, listening to Sia's Lady Croissant album, the live recordings have a bigger air on the Sony, where it is much easier to hear the people from the crowd on the intros to the songs...

Those differences, whilst there, are not deal breakers, I could happily live with either / or of the players up to that point... for me, what seperates the men from the boys - with no EQ / settings on either player, the highs are much more precise on the Sony, cymbals sound much less splashy, and more in control than they do on the Zune - and I love the Zune dearly, so that is another thing that I have said on these forums in the past couple of weaks - almost against seemingly against my better judgement!!

Well, this has made one thing very clear for me... There is absolutely nowhere in my collection for my Cowon D2... That will be going on ebay, or in the FS forum here - very soon

Oh, one negative thing for me... the X1000 is a total fingerprint magnet, far more than my iPhone or Xperia... This is going to be a bit of a nightmare to keep clean I feel

Duncan, where did you get your JVC woodies from? Anywhere in the South East?
Wow! Thanks. That's saying a lot. Well I pre order mine sony already. You're right. I feel the same way about my Zune and if the x-1000 is on par or better, that's good. enough for me.

Oh yeah, it's terrible. Mine was smothered within seconds! I'm going to see if I can cut my spare Touch screen protector to fit, it's much more smudge proof. And one of the negs I found... is that the screen is so gorgeous, I have to keep touching it randomly just to gaze at it in awe. The black is really really black

Yes, I have been toying with, over and over again, getting a Zune 120 to complement the 30, but - now, with the Sony, other than the space limitation (32gb vs 120gb) there is no reason for me to go for the Zune any longer...

Walkingman - If you're really desperate, they're in the Apple Store on Regent Street, London - However, again - I must really point out that you'd be better off getting a pair of FX500s from overseas (in a value perspective at least, even though I do not feel ripped off paying as much as I did for the FX1000...)

indeed - I truly love OLED displays - I have the Nokia N85, and - for a short while had the Samsung Tocco Ultra... something addictive about the quality - Roll on when TVs become OLED (at a decent size, and at a relatively affordable price)

Thanks. Not desperate, just curious. This site do give people so many ideas. My wallet is starting to protest now!

Agree about the fingerprint smudges, but it is no worse than any touchscreen devices I have own.

The Sony being 32gb in flash drive format is another plus though. That's a heck of a lot of storage with the reliability of flash. But I bet 64gb flash is not too far off, and then we'll all be saying '...damn, if only the Sony was a 64'.

Mine will be going skiing with me! So flash is good!

Well that speaks volumes, I really loved my zune 30 and I'm messing with a D2+ now (sounds identical to the d2- still a little to thin sounding too my ears)), that will be going back to amazon when my X arrives from UK. You still think the screen is plastic? I told sooz to take one of those pence coins to it but she's too chicken. But there will probably be somebody on you-tube taking all kinds of nasty things to the screen. There always is anymore, hey you guys could watch that vid on the X's Themselves

Breathtaking. I was literally a few moments away from having my card swiped for the s9 but had this gut feeling that I may need to look at the new X Series across the road.

Decided to hop shops and say hello to the folks at the Sony shop and then it came to me. This thing. It is way way sexier than the S9. It feels gorgeous, unique and one of kind.

No regrets..
