Best way to get optical out of my laptop?

I'm trying a way to get the best optical signal out of my laptop to feed my external DAC which doesn't have USB input.
My laptop (HP dv9925nr) has the SPDIF out (3.5mm) but I'm not sure if it's good enough and offers bit-perfect.
So, which way is the best for me to get 24/96 or 24/192 out of my laptop?
+ Simply buy a 3.5mm->optical cable to connect with my DAC.
+ Buy a M-Audio Transit.
+ Buy an ExpressCard soundcard that has optical out.

Any idea would be appreciated.

My vote goes to using the built in optical S/PDIF out, directly into your external DAC.
But, make sure you use bit-perfect software for playback. Ex. Foobar2000 and ASIO, if you run MS Windows.

Yes, I'm using Foobar with WASAPI but still have no idea if the built-in SPDIF has 24/96 or not.

Since I'm a nice guy, and I was bored (mainly because I was bored); I did some digging to find out about the chip they use in your laptop. It's a Conexant chip, and according to their site, all the new chips support DVD audio at 24-bit/96kHz.

Enjoy.

Sweet Thanks for your boredom.
I've just ordered a 3.5mm->TOSLINK to try with my DAC to see if there's any difference.

Not sure what you are having issues with? If you are using spdif/optical you just plug it into the correct port and change the playback to realtek digital

the problem is :

i have a laptop, which only has a HDMI out, and a 3.5mm audio output jack

and i have a home cinema suit which has optical input for sorround sound (and no HDMI in port)

my tv has HDMI in port.

so i want to output the video via HDMI to my TV, and the audio (sorround) via my 3.5 mm output port on laptop, via an optical cable to the home cinema suit.

any ideas ?

btw, thanks for the image.
