The part about sounding like crap, is, of course, just your opinion. The Avaiation pads, I agree, sound like crap. On the DT990, the Beyer leather pads sounded good, in my opinion - better than the velours. In the 880, neither the velour or leather pads gave a sound I could live with, which is what I find so exciting about these new pads.
The 770 leather pads, which are different from the 880/990 pads in terms of the typs and volume of padding used, sound excellent on the 770. The 770 are the worst with velour pads - they sound awful with these.
I am happy to report, however, that the pads from JMoney also sound excellent on the DT990. The 990's have a little less bass, but a little less recessed midrange, and a better soundstage, when using the JMoney pads versus the stock Beyer pads.
