Andrew, holes on the back is not meant for 880\990, it's just normal leather pads have these holes. Aviation ones have none.

CDBackslash, all770\880\990 pads are interchangeable dimension-wize.

Once more to make sure it gets through to everyone - there used to be DT880/990 specific leather pads available from the Manufaktur. This is exactly what I and a lot of other people got in a *group by* order from Beyerdynamic, actually one guy just ordered DT880 and a bunch of head-fiers piggy backed on that order for extra earpads. And they sounded like crap.

All manufactur leathers have these holes. And these pads are for 770 primarily.

yup, the specific leather pads are available from the Manufaktur, but only can order together when the moment u made your own headphone. I have asked them whether can it be sold alone, and their said no

The part about sounding like crap, is, of course, just your opinion. The Avaiation pads, I agree, sound like crap. On the DT990, the Beyer leather pads sounded good, in my opinion - better than the velours. In the 880, neither the velour or leather pads gave a sound I could live with, which is what I find so exciting about these new pads.

The 770 leather pads, which are different from the 880/990 pads in terms of the typs and volume of padding used, sound excellent on the 770. The 770 are the worst with velour pads - they sound awful with these.

I am happy to report, however, that the pads from JMoney also sound excellent on the DT990. The 990's have a little less bass, but a little less recessed midrange, and a better soundstage, when using the JMoney pads versus the stock Beyer pads.

I have pleather pads on my DT770 '05 250 ohm (not sure what pleather pads, they have a bunch of holes in the bottom and the previous owner told me he got them from Headroom). Would these pads be a significant improvement sound-wise? If so, I may jump on them.

The leather pads have not been an available option on Manufaktur for the DT880 and DT990 for quite some time now. I've also spoken to a couple of reps at Beyer about the leather pads and they've both advised against them due to SQ issues. Anyone considering the Beyer leather pads should take a moment and call Beyer directly for advice @ 011 49 7131 617 224.

As for the Jmoney leather pads, I'd like to try them if there are tangible design differences/improvements to the Beyers, and there's a reasonable return policy...

If you don't know this, Beyer finally realized that leather pads negatively affect sound of DT880/990 and took them out as an option. You can go to Manufakture site and check it yourself, it's only available for DT770. I believe bizkid posted this information a while ago.
Bottom line, stay with velour, if you want more bass just get yourself 600Ohm version, it has plenty. No, not for you, Skylab.

I wouldn't call it "exact", but the bottom line is the same. The guy I responded to stated the leather pads are available as a Manufaktur option, I guess he missed your point even after quoting your post. That's why I shared my experience and posted Beyer's phone number for direct advice from the manufacturer.
