There are so many suppliers for different small components... We are waiting for one of them before we assemble HM801, test and ship out. We were told that they will finish early next week. This is an unexpected delay. The longer and earlier delay was from Texas Instrument dealer (PCM1704UK vender). We must be careful at the begining so that we have to make relative small 1st and 2nd batches. 3rd batch will be 1000 pcs hopefully, and will save us from the delay-delay situation finally.

just a bit of update~ last night i finished my battery for the 1st time.

battery life is at least 7 hours no problem.

also while power off charging, it seems like only take an hour or 2 to fully charge.... i found this odd though~ is every one else the same ? i m surprise how fast it charge or its not true and it is not fully charge just may be 60~80% really ?

Considering I will be out of town for a 2 weeks after New Year, is there any way to delay the shipment of my 801?

I was checking out the battery and the circuit with my Fluke meter. It appears that the battery pack, is actually two separate batteries, one being +9 volts and one being −9 Volts. If you look at the charger, there is a plastic piece so that you don't reverse polarity by accident. I measured the inside and the outside of each of the "prongs" and each prong is providing each battery 9 Volts at the same time, one positive and one negative.
So, this is why it is able to charge fully in 2-4 hours being that each battery has it's own charging circuit.
If you look on the charger, it says: AC 110v~
———————————————----#1 DC 9V 1000mA
———————————————----#2 DC 9V 1000mA
This is probably offering the ability to charge in a much shorter duration, then say, an iPod or my Blackberry.
With the battery pack broken into split voltages, and the battery life lasting between 7-8 hours, you gotta think that these chips in the amp and the DAC, are pulling some serious power, which attributes to the quality of the sound.

That's the secret. The magic ingredient, so to speak.

wow, you just break the secret lol then i better un-plug when not using or charging~ otherwise it will suck pretty serious juice out of my bill even not using (while not charging or using, the adaptor still feels warm)

I'm sort of close to getting this player. I'm going to get a case made here in India. If I get the player and it's shipped considerably before March 20th, 2010 then I'll do a video review followed by an in-depth article review with photos.

If it arrives afterwords, I'll be back in India and will have to wait until I go back to America again (the following August, at the earliest -- and I've been told that I might not get to go back during that time).

This is all considering I can convince my parents to buy this for me. I have $200 from my birthday. I also have my sister who wants to get me a gift so she'll contribute (hopefully $100-200). That narrows it down to a $300-400 purchase. Which is in the vicinity of how much I spent on my Cowon A3. Hopefully my parents will let me buy it... Although, they're definite skeptics. Even as much as I've researched this player, I'm having trouble getting them to believe it's the real deal.

I believe I can confirm two batteries setup. Fang indirectly stated this in email some 2 weeks ago when I had experienced some strange behaviour of HM-801. He suggested that only one polarity had been charged, which - now I only can assume - could mean that it's in fact only one battery that had been charged (and the other one had been not).

Anyway, immtbiker thanks for explaining this in detail.

Yea, cause you can't charge one polarity of a single battery.. That's just not how the chemistry works.. Electricity comes out of negative, and returns to positive (yes, that is fact, not the other way around as some believe)..
The sealed battery back has 2 separate batteries in it (you can feel them if you observe the battery pack). Also there are 4 gold "pins" on the battery pack. One positive for each battery and one negative. There are 4 "prongs" on the inside of the battery bay: One positive for each battery and one negative. The charger has 2 unique plugs on the charging end, one for +9Volts and one for -9Volts, separated by a plastic stand-off so you can't plug it in the wrong way, and reverse polarities. Each plug has a ground on the outside, and the voltage on the inside (or visa-versa, I can't remember it when I measured).

If one battery is not being charged, or holding a charge, the unit wouldn't work. It needs both batteries.

Thank you Nankai/Fang!

I think I've got enough to buy the player now. I got it narrowed down to $300. I need approval from my parents, but I think they trust me and will get me this one gift.

I think I'm going to have a leather case made that exposes all the ports and houses the player with an elastic cloth. Meaning, the player will slide into the leather case, but the opened end will have an elastic cloth which can be pulled down so the player will go into it and then it will snap back up again to hold the HM-801 in place (it will have openings so the buttons will be accessable). I might also get a magnetic flap on it for added protection for the screen (which will be exposed) and buttons that can be pulled up. It'll also have a velcroe flap that will go over the volume knob so if the HM-801 is placed in your pocket or bookbag or somewhere else, it won't get rubbed and either kill or blast the music. I just need to find someone here who can get it done for me, but India's ridiculously resourceful when it comes to stuff like that.

This is all for late March, when I get back to India. However, since I will get it before then, I will most definitely create a video review and textual review of the player.

Just the thought of the possibilities of this marvel makes me drool.

(actually my cans are more like: )
